I have a CD of the Crimean War Medal Rolls wherein the 6th Dragoon Guards is conspiculously absent from the 'bookmarked' regiments. Nonetheless the 6th Dragoon Guards (Carabiniers) did serve in the Cavalry Division of the Crimean War. Ancestry.com has also omitted the 6th Dragoon Guards from its medal roll index.
I have discovered that the Carabiniers records in WO100-24 have been tacked on the end of the 5th Dragoon Guards medal roll records and begin on folio 108 and end on folio 118. I imagine they are not complete.
By careful cross-matching of a selection of names, I have discovered that ancestry.com has indexed the men of the 6th Dragoon Guards as 5th Dragoon Guards.
Hope this is helpful to those who have not yet discovered the same problem.

Re: Crimean War Medal Rolls
Dianne,
I know it’s a little late but the actual Crimea Medal Rolls of each regiment (bound in groups) are now freely available online from the National Archives web site, the draw back is they are very large pdf files.
Checking through WO 100/24 (402 page pdf) clearly shows the problem, unlike the roll of the 5th DGs than runs to (grouped) roll page 107 and the 1st Royal Dragoons that runs from grouped roll page120 and the headers of which are in very large letters, the roll of 6th Dragoon Guards (Carabiniers) (grouped roll pages 108 –119) is only headed “Carribiniers” and in small writing at that, so could easily be mistaken as a continuation of the 5th DGs roll. The Carribiniers roll shows the original page numbers (1 to 11) that have been renumbered with the grouped roll numbers and as there are no damaged or missing pages I would suggest it is the full roll.
There is nothing anywhere on the roll to identify the Carribiniers as the 6th Dragoon Guards, but they should at least have been identified as the Carribiniers; do Ancestry have a policy of correcting errors?

Re: Crimean War Medal Rolls
Hello Jeff
I'm pleased (in an odd sort of way) you picked up on the 6th Dragoon Guards problem. The same problem is on the CD version that I have - no flagging on the header that it is 6th DG. I would probably not have noticed it except that Larry Crider in the US (of In Search of the Light & Heavy Brigade) asked me the question after trying to find the men on ancestry.com and that is how I found the problem.
Ancestry does have a policy of correct errors and I think I may have reported it (and many others from the medal roll). Trouble is, I expect they would have to return to TNA and do some re-filming. However, they are much better at attending to problems than findmypast.com who do not acknowledge problems, let alone fix them. I have reported a number of errors in WO97 where the transcription does not match the image which throws out the sequence of the images ad infinitum. It is over two years now since I batched some errors together and sent them off ..... but no corrections have been made. Perhaps you should try reporting to ancestry.com too.
Thank you for your post about all this ..... Speaking of TNA, I tried a free download of the Punjab Medal rolls from TNA's 'Discovery' site to no avail. It just would not download and shows the file size as 0 MB, so something has gone wrong. Perhaps if one pays nothing, one gets nothing!

Re: Crimean War Medal Rolls
Hello Dianne,
The reason I asked if Ancestry have a correction policy is that I am a registered user not a subscriber so although I can create and reply to message boards I don’t have regular access to records and cannot even responding to personal communications from a subscriber (hence I block contact).
As for Findmypast, I have found their policy is somewhat variable where census are concerned and I certainly disagree with them changing text from what is actually shown on a document to what they “prefer” to show e.g. in WO 97 series (soldiers papers) when County stated as Hants replaced with Hampshire, Salop replaced with Shropshire, Lancaster or Lancs replaced with Lancashire, etc., rather than adding the full name in brackets.
Re Punjab Medal Roll
There were certainly problems in trying to download some digitised files when the new “discovery” catalogue system was introduced, but I found reporting the problem was quickly replied to by the NA with a note saying they were aware of the problem AND a new link to enable direct download without using the catalogue purchase system.
Having said that, I’ve found with free downloads like the WO100 piece numbers, that when initially running through the “purchase process” from adding to the basket the file size is shown as 0 MB, but if you continue through to payment confirmation you should find the file size is correctly shown and can be either downloaded from there or via a link sent by email. If you still have problems give me the piece number(s) you are looking for and I will check it can be obtained as I described above.
