Today The Pocket straddles the border of Floyd and Walker counties. But before the 1920s or 1930s the Floyd County portion was part of Gordon County. There is a "Fowler" cemetery in The Pocket Recreation Area (the location isn't marked so you'll have to get directions from the campground host). The Fowler family that lived there was mostly in Walker County and included M. Bumpass Fowler and D. C. Fowler. D.C. operated a grocery store/post office out of his house (in the Walker County portion of The Pocket) named "Zone" in honor of his daughter, Arizona Fowler (who was born the year that Arizona became a state - which would have been around 1912 or 1916 if memory serves). Pretty much the entire area was bought up by the National Forest Service in the 1930s and there are very few traces of the pioneer families that once lived in The Pocket. I have a nice photo of the D.C. Fowler family at The Zone. As mentioned in a previous post, I wrote "Remembering the Pocket" published in North Georgia Journal magazine (I believe Autumn 1993). I'll be glad to provide further information from my material to those interested.
