Mary Edwards Walker (1832-1919) - Oswego, NY Surgeon, Union Army, Civil War
Mary Edwards Walker, born in Oswego, NY, was a pioneer woman physician and dress reformer and became known for her insistence on wearing men's clothes, which was more radical than the "bloomers" of other reformers. Miss Walker served with distinction as a war nurse and a surgeon with the Union Army during the Civil War. After the war she returned to her small medical practice and independent suffrage work.

Re: Mary Edwards Walker (1832-1919) - Oswego, NY Surgeon, Union Army, Civil War
I am interested in your post. Here is an email I was sending to someone researching the Walker line.
Hello, I am trying to find more info on Dr. Mary Edwards Walker, she is the daughter of Alvah Walker and Vesta H Whitcomb. I believe Alvah might be the son of Abel Walker and Mary Snow. I am also trying to find the connect of Mary Edwards Walker and my family. My mom says she was always told she was a cousin, but she is not sure of which line she is a cousin to. I have a photo of Mary in an album that contains my great grandmothers family. Jennie "Birdie" Higley is my great grandmother, she was born 9-19-1859 and she is the daughter of Alonzo Higley and Emily Jane Boynton. Birdie married Orion Thomas 4-20-1881. The album contains other members on the Higley family so that is where I have been trying to make the connection. Emily Boynton born 10-7-1821 to the parents of John Boynton and Hulda Eaton. Emily died young 5-15-1865. Birdie lived until 6-13-1947.
I would appreciate any help, Thanks Tina Smith

Re: Mary Edwards Walker (1832-1919) - Oswego, NY Surgeon, Union Army, Civil War
Hi Tina, I just now saw this message you put on Ancestry.com in 2002. I'm new to Ancestry.com. Dr. Mary Edwards Walker is the niece of my Great, great, great grandmother Harriet Walker Hall. She married John Smith Hall who lived in Columbus, OH. That line came from Whales. Harriet's brother Alva married Vesta Whitcomb and their daughter was Mary E. Walker. When I became of member of DAR I went through the Walker line. My Patriot is Abel Walker...He had a son Named Abel Walker who married Mary Snow. They had a number of children two being Harriet and Alva. Dr. Mary E. Walker spent some time in Columbus, OH with family. I was given a sterling silver spoon from her family collection. About 8 years ago I went up to Oswego and met with many from the town and even met a woman who was also related to Mary. She was very old at that time, so I am not sure if she is still alive. I have only recently in the last year started researching through Ancestry. com....When I have time. I also have a Civil Patriot on the Snow side. I am sure I have more family information but perhaps this will help.

Hi, It was so great to see your post even from a message that I posted so long ago. I have never been able to make a connection between my family and her family. It is possible that the photo I have of her was something that my GG Grandfather collected at one of the GAR Reunions. He was a member of the Stanton Post, G. A. R., of Los Angeles, Ca. and was even president at one time. He attended quite a few of the unions. He served for Indiana and he died in 1917 at the age of 70. He was only 15 when he enlisted. He is one of my favorite ancestors. Thanks for the reply
