On ancestry.com I found several military records for a Thomas J. Durvin. In the "Returns from Military Posts, 1806-1916" he is listed under the Fort Garland New Mexico post, Colorado Territory, as being in the 16th Infantry, temporarily attached to the 2nd Cavalry since Oct. 1861. There are returns dated from Oct. 1861 to July 1862 saying the same thing. He starts out as a 2nd Lt. and is promoted to 1st Lt. In "U. S. Returns from Regular Army Infantry Regiments 1821-1916" he is listed as 'missing in action since Sept. 19, 1863'. I cannot find him listed in the National Parks Soldiers & Sailors System. I would appreciate any information on Thomas J. Durvin (sometimes listed as Dervin) - what happened to him, where was he from, etc.? Thanks in advance.

According to the book by Francis B. Heitman; "Historical Register and Dictionary of the United States Army from its organization, September 29, 1789 to March 2, 1903" the name is actually Thomas James Durnin. He was from Pennsylvania. The name is not 'Durvin' - ancestry has it wrong.
