A Private with Shoulder Bars? Is that possible?

A Private with Shoulder Bars? Is that possible?

My great-grand aunt was a serious family historian. She was a member of the DAR and did all the research herself back in the early 1900s when researching was hard and time consuming. She said in her records this picture is of her father, you would think she would know her own father!

But her father never advanced past private, I have both his military record and his pension file.

Could this be a picture of a private? This soldier has shoulder bars?

It's difficult to see in the picture what is on those, however in modern U.S. Army, the shoulder straps like that is used only for officers. It is a traditional insignia recently brought back with the introduction of the Army Service Uniforms. From what I know of that, it is based off the traditional shoulder straps, which replaced the epaulette's, which were only for officers. So I would assume either that isn't who you think it is, OR he did actually get beyond that rank.

My cousin and I think we have resolved this. It is not our gg-grandfather, but our gg-uncle.
