I am trying to find a photograph of Albert Skofstad, captain of Co. D, 15th Wisconsin Infantry.
He was born Anton Johannesen Skofstad, 2 Jul 1839, Lier, Buskerud, Norway.
His parents were Johannes Evenson Skofstad and Bertha Olsdatter Kallerud.
The family emigrated to the U.S. in 1840 with a group of Norwegians who settled at Norway Twp, Racine County, Wisconsin.
After the Civil War, Albert moved to Decorah, Winneshiek Co, Iowa, where he was a sheriff (ca 1866-68). Wife, Cornelia, and three children b IA: James (b), Mable (b 1867) & Ada (b 1869)
He was in Kansas, apparently intending to purchase land and move there, when he died 14 Oct 1873 in Humboldt, Allen County. His widow and children moved to Los Angeles, where they lived the rest of their lives, but without leaving any living descendants or property.
I am hoping that a photo of Albert has ended up with descendants of his brothers:
- Ole Johannesen Skofstad (1835-1914); sons Burton Skofstad (b ca 1871), Albert L Skofstad (b ca 1875); daughter Anna M (b ca 1867); all children b IL
- Even Johannesen Skofstad (1837-1909); son Johannes/John Skofstad (1877-1924); daughters Bertha Clara (b 1869), Josephine Emelia (b 1871), Minnie (b 1873), & Hattie (b 1880); all children b WI
