Union or Confederate Soldier?

Union or Confederate Soldier?

I think that this photo represents my GGGF who I thought lived in North Carolina and would have fought as a Confederate. Is this scruffy looking guy in a Confederate or Union uniform? One observer thinks that his glassy-eyed look could be from too much alcohol during a Civil War reunion. Do you have any opinions on this odd photo?

Hello

I found the same backdrop in a Ambrotype in the Liljenquist Family Collection

This indicates the photograph was taken during the Civil War and was of a Union soldier

This photograph was most likely taken in the early part of the war 1861-1863 as from 1864-1865 the Tintype became much more popular and the Ambrotype fizzled out.

Hope this helps

Jon

The US Flag is a dead giveaway for a Union soldier.

The identity of the Civil War soldier is unknown. No family stories include mention of him and no handwritten ID was found on or with the photo. A wild guess is that he was an ALFORD since the tintype was found amongst ALFORD belongings.
