Forgotten War Veteran

I am looking for any available information on George Stillie who died in Melbourne, Australia in 1919. He was a naval war veteran of the American Civil War and was buried in an unmarked grave. Stillie’s wife died before he did and their only child died in New Zealand in 1912. Any information on his birth, life, family, death and burial will be greatly appreciated. jamesmgray@bigpond.com

We have done the research on Stillie and the three other Civil War veterans buried at the Cheltenham Cemetery in Melbourne. We were successful in obtaining a VA marker for the grave of African American veteran John Henry Smith, and a ceremony was attended by many, including a US. Consul official in 2013. One of the veterans buried there was actually in the Union Navy, but, in the night assault on Fort Sumter in 1863, he deserted to the Confederate side, so is not eligible for a grave marker. We have already tried for markers for the grave of Stillie and the other veteran, but unsuccessfully. The U.S. Consul had indicated that they would help us, but so far, no further word.

STILLIE WAS NEVER A SO CALLED "FORGOTTEN" VETERAN. WE HAVE BEEN RESEARCHING HIM FOR YEARS, AND HAVE ALL THE DETAILS AND EVEN MORE FROM VARIOUS SOURCES. I SUGGEST THAT, IF YOU WANT ALL THE FACTS, YOU PAY FOR COPIES OF HIS DOCUMENTS FROM THE NATIONAL ARCHIVES, AS WE OURSELVES HAVE BEEN DOING, FOR YEARS, INSTEAD OF RELYING ON OTHERS TO DO ALL THE HARD WORK.
