Gov. Ellis began purchasing ships for a state navy prior to North Carolina's secession from the Union. Navy appointments were made within 2 weeks of secession with Commander William T. Muse being chosen as its leader.

I am trying to locate names of men that served in the North Carolina Navy before it was turned over to the CS Navy in late July of 1862. The officers are not in question. They are listed in the report of the Military and Naval Board to the Convention in June of 1861. I'm looking for the enlisted sailors.

Ships that were actually in commission as part of the NC Navy include the Albemarle (not the ironclad), Kahukee, Beaufort, and Winslow.
