Hopson Lewis, Sr. 1822-1876 Regiment in the Civil War, Mississippi

Hopson Lewis, Sr. 1822-1876 Regiment in the Civil War, Mississippi

I am looking for a record for Hopson Lewis b. 1822 AL USA d. 20 Jul 1876 Scott County, MS USA. He married Sallie Humphreys in 1 Jan 1855. He moved from AL to Lauderdale Co., MS before 1860. I believe he joined from the Lauderdale area. I have found one record showing an H. Lewis; Company A, Exchanged Battalion, CSA; Private. He moved to Scott County after the Civil War. Since he moved to Scott County after the War, he didn't have the CW veteran buddies to talk with. His Wife, Sarah A. (Sallie) didn't apply for a widow's pension until around 1900. She did NOT know his regiment. We don't know if she got a pension. Can you help?

Have you seen the 1863 record that lists Hampson A. Lewis here at ancestry.com at U.S. Returns from Regular Army Infantry Regiments, 1821-1916?

It's a possibility....

Have you ever heard of an Exchange Battalion associated with the Civil War? It sounds funny.

Where do you see Exchange Battalion? I don't see that on the record...?

From the record, Hampson Lewis was a Cook in a hospital... That would seem to be a fitting occupation for an "older" man in the infantry.

Still, he might not be the same man, but is a possibility...

I had never heard of this, but from what I can tell from info on the Interent -- Exchanged Battalions were "prisoners" who were turned back over to their own side and who swore they would no longer fight the other side. I don't have good documentation on this, although it sounds right...

That what I suspected it meant. I also thought of US prisoners agreeing to fight for the CSA.

My understanding is that exchanged prisoners were allowed to fight again. An exchanged battalion could have been one that had been captured as a unit and exchanged as a unit and the unit would return to service.
On the other hand, a paroled prisoner gave oath not to fight again.
The book, "Parole, Pardon, Pass and Amnesty Documents of the Civil War: An Illustrated History" by Jr. John Martin Davis and George B. Tremmel indicates the processes of exchange and parole changed during the course of the war.

Hello, Joe. I sent that out in 2013 when I was looking for Hopson. We continue to connect. I didn't know people outside of Ancestry could reply to posts. Shows how much I know.

The widow's pension offers a little information that may help track down his regiment. Attached is the file where Sallie notes that his regiment was a member of McNair's Brigade and was commanded by a Captain C.M. Ohlson (Olsen?).

I would post a query here

http://www.history-sites.com/cgi-bin/bbs62x/mscwmb/webbbs_co...

asking if anyone can identify the regiment given the name of the Captain and the brigade in which it may have served at some time. Mention, too, that he lived in Lauderdale County in 1860.

The only McNair that comes to mind is Evander McNair whose brigade was active in the Vicksburg siege in 1863. I know his command usually had Arkansas regiments and am not sure if any from Mississippi were attached or not.

As far as I know, an exchanged Confederate soldier would have been one that was surrendered and then allowed to return to service after having been exchanged for a Union soldier. I believe those surrendered at Fort Donelson were later exchanged, and know that those captured at Vicksburg were, but understand that the practice was later discontinued.

Try posting your query at that board. Those folks tend to know a good bit and can probably help track down this regiment.

Good luck,

Scott
