Incorrect Gravestone

I recently located the burial site for my GG-Grandfather who served in Company A of the 13th US Infantry. He is buried in Beaver Brook cemetery in Luzerne County, PA which from what I've read has been abandoned. Someone did take photos of graves there and post them on findagrave, but the information on my GG-Granfather's headstone is incorrect. It lists him as being in the 97th PA Infantry. I think when he passed away, they must have just assumed he was in that regiment. It took a lot of doing for my GG-Grandmother to get her Widow's Pension because when he signed up for the Army he couldn't read or write so they signed him up as John Glen instead of John McGlynn. I would like to have his headstone corrected if possible. Does anyone know if this is something that could be done? Is it even worth it since the cemetery is abandoned?

I feel your pain. I went ahead and bought a IN MEMORY OF
marker thru ELEGANT ACCENTS website you may want to check out. There should be a law against abandonment of cemeteries.

Even though abandoned(maybe) you might get names of some other head stones & try to search those names on Ancestry to see if any family trees come up with current contact person. If there is you might be able to get with those people & see if u can clean up the cemetery or find out someone maybe still owns it & has records or might start to reclaim. As for a new head stone you would have to contact the Veterans Administration to find out the rules & procedures to get a new headstone for a civil war veteran.

Beaver Brook Cemetery was cleaned up a few years ago by the AmVets and Boy scouts. The diocese of Scranton has since put a locked fence around it. It was St. Patrick's but since the Diocese is in Schuylkill County, St. Gabriel's and the Diocese of Scranton own it, because it is located in Luzerne. I grew up in Beaver Brook and my Parent's still live there. The Cemetery was actually moved because it was sinking into the mine's. Some headstones remain most unreadable.
Most bodies were buried in a mass un marked grave in St. Patrick's Cemetery in McAdoo.
Hope this helps some.
