I have an interesting scenerio with one of my ancestors who was supposedly in E Co, 107th PA.
Full story/background:
There is a entry in the Pennsylvania Veterans Burial Cards index for a Henry Jones (1818-1900), all the details match up with a Henry Jones in my family tree, to include the cemetery in which he is buried. It gives his unit as Co. E., 107th Reg. P.V. and a service entry date of 9-21-1864.
When I check the rolls for the 107th, there is an entry for a Henry Jones, mustered on 9-12-1864. He was a substitue, and is listed as being mustered in Meadville but never reporting to his unit. Also, the age on this record is listed as 22, and he should have been 46.
If he never actually arrived at and served in the unit, why would he be listed in the veteran burial index? Is there a possibility he showed up at a later date? It just seems strange overall. Considering he made some significant land purchases immediately after the war would it be likely that he took the money for being a substitute and then never bothered to join his unit?
