Could this have been Brooks Battalion, CSA. I was looking for a John Houseman and brothers from Illinois. Found John listed for an Illinois group as well as Brooks. On searching for Brooks, CSA, I found this was a group of northern prisoners of war recruited from a Southern prison. They didn't make it out as someone informed the CSA officers these men intended to take the guns and horses and return posthaste to the Union lines. Nancy
