Hi Kevin

This is great. Wonder if you can find a record for Benjamin Burdick, Company D, 149th Infantry, NY. His tombstone says he died at Andersonville Prison. Family history says he died at Libby Prison in Richmond, VA.

I just recently discovered he was wounded and presumably captured 15 May 1864 at Resaca, GA so his being in Andersonville makes sense. Since another record says he is buried in Alexandria, VA perhaps he'd been moved to Libby at some point.

Appreciate any help you can give. Thanks.

Although there are 18 on record from the 149th New York, he is not listed as being here. Most of those sent here were captured at Peachtree creek Georgia. I also checked for Benjamin in all records from all states and again came up with nothing. I wish I had more.

Kevin,
Thank you for checking. And so quickly. This is undoubtedly a mystery (why Andersonville is on his tombstone) that the family will never have the answer to.
I haven't found him listed at Libby Prison yet either. But I'll keep looking.
Keep up the good work.

It was very common for those family at home to place symbolic headstones in family cemeteries or Church cemeteries for a place of closure. This was very common for those who died here at Andersonville. By chance, did the headstone show a date he was reported to have died here?

Yes, it does have a date unfortunately I no longer have that information. I live in VA and there is no family left in the town (Central Square, NY) where his tombstone is to check for me. However I will be returning to live up there in a couple months (in Elmira, NY - can you believe it!) and will visit the cemetary and compare what the tombstone says and what info I've found.

Checking the cemetary records online he is not listed nor any of the family although there are several generations buried there. I used to go up with my grandparents to put flowers on the graves so I do know where the graves are.

Thanks again. You can tell I'm new to this, and it is addictive!

If you can get more details it might help in finding a drastic alternate spelling. Who knows?
