My grandfather, Frank Tracey, was a Sapper in the 2nd Field Company in WWI "for 15 months", sometime between 1914 and 1917, yet before the war was over, he was living with his sister in New York City working as a "bus conductor". How is this even possible?

Hi Jim.
I appreciate your interest, but I have been in touch with two different people (Sandra and Ken from CME) who have been most helpful in this matter. They have given me a lot of information, but the service records of my grandfather are currently being digitized, so I have to wait for the complete picture.
Thanks again.
Marianne
