I have just found out today that my GGgrandfather was Robert Davis (1804-1838), and he died during the Rebellion of 1837. He was married to Rosina Hall (from London, England). Their son Hugh Davis was born Oct 13, 1832. He was my Ggrandfather. I would appreciate any information I can get on this part of my family. Thank You.....

I have a History of Canada for High Schools text book by Duncan McArthur published by W.J. Gage & Co. Ltd. 1943. This book has a good section on the rebellion. I am looking for a gggrandfather that served at the Battle of the Windmill - and forgot I had the book - I didn't get the information I needed but if any of it is of interest for your purposes please e-mail me at saheaton@telus.net.

This is a late post to your query...

I have fairly recently learned that my ggg-grandmother, Alexvina Gilmour, had a brother - Sir Charles Gilmour, "commander of the [British] forces in Canada in 1837".

This is documented in a book written about her granddaughter, Minnie E. Kenney (Mrs. George A. Paull), who became a well-known author of childrens books and inspirational writings. I have a copy of this book in my possession.

That's all that's mentioned concerning his possible involvement in the Rebellion of 1837 - and was the first time I even knew of his existence. Sir Charles & Alexvina had another sister, Charlotte Gilmour, who never married and is listed in the 1881 UK census in Chester, Cheshire as a "retired governess". There may well have been other siblings as well.

If you can either corroborate this information - or have anything to add on him, I'd be very grateful.

My gggrandfather, Jeremiah Winegar, was a participant in the 1838 "Battle of the Windmill". He was captured, tried and sentenced to be executed, but was pardoned. He returned to his home in Dexter, Jefferson County, where he died in 1865.

I share your interest in the Canadian Rebellion of 1837, and after 25 years of researching the conflict, I have just published a 514-page book detailing the 1837-1838 cross-border raids and their aftermath, especially regarding the 92 Americans and Canadians who were transported to Van Diemen’s Land. You can correspond with me via my e-mail address: stupat@worldnet.att.net, and also find more about the book on my web site: http://www.1837rebellion.net Stuart D. Scott
