He was in the 1st Battalion Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry in India (1897-1898) and in the 2nd Battalion of the same regiment in South Africa (both regimental number 3422). He was listed as J Ashford. All the bars fit. Mystery solved thanks to you.

If he did serve in WWI there's a slim chance you may find a record or pension file here on Ancestry but most WWI service records were destroyed in the bombing during WW2.

Perhaps you might be of some help, I know it is probably a long shot. My grandfather and his brother both had gone to S. Africa to fight in the Boer War. My Grandfather returned but his brother did not. It is believed he had died there. The family story was that the last time they saw each other was when my Grandfather happened to see him on the platform of the train station as it was pulling away and that was the last he or any of the family had seen or heard of him.
John Collins was born June 10, 1873, enlisted in Cranbrook B.C., on April 26, 1902, with the 5th Regiment of the Canadian Mounted Rifles, Regiment No. 181; went to South Africa to fight in the Boer War. source: Military Documents Attestation Papers (Defaulters Book)I have a copy of his attestation papers.

Boer is the Afrikaans word for farmer also used to describe the Afrikaaners themselves - hope none of them spot you referring to them as porcine!!

served in Boar conflict - (John) Owen TULLY

Hello, I'm trying to find a record of my ancestor Owen Tully (we believe he added "John" as first name at some point). Born in Ireland (1856), he went to England (Lancashire?)abt. 1875. We think he served in S. Africa in the Boar conflict. There is a census listing of a John Owen Tully in Lancashire (1881)and getting married in 1889. There is a good chance that he is my ancestor. Assuming he is, that means he would have been in the military between abt 1876-1880, or 1881-1888. I have tried to find records about him but not being at all familiar with British records/terminology, I'm not doing very well with this. Could anyone help me? Thank you.

Thanks so much for taking the time to find out all of this information. My grandfather was born on 18 November 1872 at Nursery Road, Harborne, Staffs. The birth was registered in Kings Norton (Worcs) Registration District. His name was given as John Ashford. This was also the case with his marriage certificate. The Alfred only appeared as his middle name on his death certificate and funeral service sheet. Therefore, it is very likely that he is recorded simply as John Ashford in military records. I will have a good look at the sites you suggest. Many thanks. Cheers Sue

Ashford, born in Solihull in 1872.

John Alfred Ashford's Regiment

Boer War experts I need your help please. My grandfather, John Alfred Ashford (born Birmingham, England), served in the Second Boer War (1899-1902) as a private and received both the King’s and Queen’s South Africa Medal. The latter has six bars: Belfast, Diamond Hill, Johannesburg, Driefontein, Paardeberg and Relief of Kimberley. These medals are not in my possession and so I’m unable to determine his regiment. Does anyone know of a likely regiment in which he may have served given this list of offensives? He was not a casualty. He also received the India medal 1895 for Tirah (1897-98) and Punjab Frontier (1897-98). Any help would be very much appreciated.

Does anyone know how I can access the passenger list for the Drayton Grange arriving in Sydney in August, 1902. It was the last troopship home to Australia from South Africa. I think my grandfather would have been on that ship.

Hugh Benedict Walls served with the Bechuanaland Rifles (Unit raised in South Africa) as at 26 September 1901 up to 30 June 1902.

The National Archives of Australia and AWM aren't able to help.

Any assistance greatly appreciated.
Deanne

Dont Know but there are a few Scottish horse Sites that may yield service records. From my reading of the Scottish horse regiments Australians joining paid their own way to Jo'burg to join. The Scottish Horse Regiment was a private regiment and has quite a history. An off shoot of the Scottish horse was the 5th Battalion a Australian Scottish battalion that was formed in WW1 and again in WW2. As a national serviceman I was drafted into 5th Battalion in Vietnam. So my battalion that i joined as links back to 1901 to my Grandfather's Regiment some 70 years later. There is quite a bit of info if you google 1st Scottish Horse.
Regards Peter

Yes, Lizzie Rainey and David Brown married on 24 Dec 1903. My Grandfather Robert was born in 1906.

I think the protestant/catholic barrier really formed after 1912... I still think it is likely they went to the same school. Lisburn would be traditionally a protestant town but your grandparents must not have been too bothered with the British/Irish debate as he signed up to fight in the British army and your great grandfather was in the RIC.
