Uncle in Second Boer War

My great great uncle either Arthur Fitton or John (Jack) D. Fitton (they were brothers) fought in the Second Boer War. However, he went missing whilst out in South Africa and to this day my family still don't know what happened to him. Newspapers in both the UK and South Africa publicised his disappearance but as far as I know he has never been found since. I was just wondering if anyone knows where I might be able to find some information on his Boer War days.

I have been researching my grandfather who was in P Battery of The RHA (I believe but RFA is also mentioned) and was injured at Battle of Paardeberg.

I have located the article in the times and NY Times and also have his letter to his aunt from hospital.

If it is not too much trouble I would be interested in your transcripts as I have just about finished Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's The Great Boer War which has proved most enlightening.

If you have an interest I would be happy to forward information we have.

Nurse in Boer War

One of my relatives who I know very, very little about was apparently a nurse in the Boer War and I believe WWI as well. Madge Thomson was from Dundee, Scotland but I have no birth date or anything else. She apparently was awarded an award for being the last surviving nurse of the Boer War but I can`t find a thing on that, and I`ve checked http://www.pcansr.net for the records there and she doesn`t appear either. She also apparently attended the Queen`s garden party at some point as well.
I know that nursing records around the time weren`t really kept or recorded at all, but I figured because she was apparently the last nurse alive, something would come up on her. Does anyone know where I could try and look.

Re: Gunner John James Wyatt. Died in Pretoria 1901.

John Dovey’s S.A. Roll of Honour web site at http://www.justdone.co.za/ROH/ indicates three Wyatt men that died and served in the Royal artillery. One J Wyatt - Royal Artillery, an A Wyatt - Royal Field Artillery and a M Wyatt - Royal Garrison Artillery. Whereas the Register of the Second Anglo-Boer War on the Casus-Belli web site shows another J Wyatt in the Royal Garrison Artillery who was a casualty but may have survived. Another web site, Roll-of-Honour, that has a searchable list of entries on the RA Memorial, at http://www.roll-of-honour.com/Databases/BoerWarArtillery/ind... , shows the three artillery men who died, and are listed on John Dovey’s site, it also indicates the details were taken from the “Royal Artillery South African Memorial Service Booklet” and the entries match the men’s units.

The GRO Index to Natal & South African Forces Deaths 1899 -1902 shows the same names as John Dovey’s site, but J Wyatt is listed as Royal Garrison Artillery [Amn. Pk] followed by the M Wyatt’s name also showing the Royal Garrison Artillery but 17w [17 Co Western Division] as his unit. I know from research I’m doing that the GRO Index and some casualty lists do have errors in them. Also the Times entry would have been taken direct from the issued casualty lists, but the GRO index is a manual collation taken from casualty returns and then reproduced in alphabetical order and as with any multiple transcription it does contain omissions and errors. From looking at the records available online, and with some speculation on my part, it looks like it’s possible the unit of the M Wyatt has been wrongly entered against J Wyatt’s name but their individual sub units have been correctly entered.

To attempt to verify if the GRO is in error, a search of the Times Digital archive [1 Jan 1900 to 31 Dec 1902] revealed:

The Times, Thursday, Aug 23, 1900; pg. 8; col B:
Deaths from Wounds Or Disease
The following deaths from wounds or disease are reported:-
[under Pretoria was]:

“Ammunition Park, R.F.A. - 75749 Gnr, J. Wyatt, died of wounds, 20 August”

The Times, Wednesday, May 15, 1901; pg. 10; col B:
The War. Casualties, From Disease.
The following deaths, due to enteric, where not otherwise stated, are reported:
[List includes]:

17th Co. W. Div. R.G.A. – 82746 Gunner M. Wyatt, Kroonstad, May 11.

Personally I would say the balance of probability is the GRO have the men’s branch of the artillery wrong, and I also note the year of death.

In your message you wrote, “as RFA but elsewhere in Army records as Royal Garrison Artillery”. As he died in service there wouldn’t normally be any record of his attestation & discharge papers in document series WO 97 at the National Archives, so if it’s not the GRO Index and as you state he died in 1901 and not 1900, may I ask what are the army records you are referring to?

As far as the ammunition parks are concerned these were ammunition columns intended to supply ammunition to the whole Army Corps rather than individual Divisions, so would really be under the global umbrella of Royal Artillery rather than the individual branches of R.F.A., R.H.A. or R.G.A.

Without a service record for Gnr Wyatt, and again as he died in service one is unlikely to have survived, I suspect the only way to resolve the matter would be to check the Royal Artillery’s section[s] of Queen’s South Africa Medal Roll at the National archives in document series WO 100. A check of the National Archives catalogue revealed that of the ten piece numbers [WO 100/137 to 146 incl] that make up the complete QSA Roll for the Royal Artillery only one mentions ammunition parks:

WO 100/144 QUEEN'S SOUTH AFRICA: Royal Field Artillery; 87 - 89, 94, 96, 99, 101, 104 - 107, 110, 115, 117, 119, 120, 129, 131, 135, 141, 142, 145, 149 - 151 Batteries, POW der Maxims R.A. (Pom-Poms), Ammunition Columns and Park, Depots, Mounted Rifles and Miscellaneous.

Hope this helps
Our great grandfather John James Wyatt b.1876 died in Pretoria Hospital in 1901. He is listed on the RA Memorial in London as RFA but elsewhere in Army records as Royal Garrison Artillery. Any assistance in locating further information on Gunner Wyatt would be most appreciated.

Gary & Kay Westwood

Deb,

Had a look around the anglo-boer war web site that the Nominal Roll was on. At http://www.angloboerwar.com/Other/wo100_sa.htm it indicates enrolment forms are in WO 126/145-163 at the National Archives.

I had a look at the catalogue the series in alphabetical order so the piece your looking for is in WO 126/159

Go to http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/search.asp , in the box above “go to reference” enter WO 126/159 and click go to …

You will end up at WO 126/159 War Office: Local Armed Forces, Enrolment Forms, South African War; Town Guards and District Mounted Troops. Sa-Sm; 1899-1902.

If you then click the “request this” button, it will take you another page where you have several options for obtaining copies. As your only interested in pages relating to Smith F A or A, the best option will be to request an estimate, it’s free so you may as well.

The alternative will be to attend yourself [that’s I where I came in wasn’t it?] or use a researcher. Going back to the previous link, from the grey menu bar “research & learning” > paid research, note the NA’s rate 60 GBP per hour, then go to independent researchers, click go and follow the prompts and you’ll find a list of researchers, several have web sites so you can quickly check their rates, others just have email. Get several estimates and make sure the rate is inclusive except for copies [ie no expenses].

Jeff
Hello grandfather Frederick Albert Smith according to his Australian Attestation papers served in "Queenstown Volunteers S/A" as he wrote it it. He was born in Vernham Dean Hampshire 188, the family moved to East London South Africa 1894 via the Goth. He managed to have enteric fever 1898, get involved in the Boer War, get married to unknown and have a child become a widower by 1901 and be in Australia by 1906 at the latest as he was married to an Australia lady by then.He states he was involved in the Boer War for 2 years 5 months. I have benable to sight a Frederick Smith in Bechuanaland Volunteers his number is 134 discharged 30.06.01 Mafeking.I cannot see any F Smith in the Queenstown Rifle Volunteers. But I am not sure if Queenstown volunteers encompasses several regiments. So I would like to get an understanding of this or these South African based British citizen regiments to help me search.
I would like to get to Kew on my next trip to England and would like to know what I am hunting for.

Appreciate any help.

Deb

Thanks for the background info and the link. I never heard any of that before. Really fascinating. I don't have much to go on, as far as details about Robert Ingram, but I will ask more questions and see if anyone remembers anything else. And his photo is stateside, and at the moment I'm over in Russia, so I don't have it within arm's reach. Will see about getting a scan and attaching it. I remember seeing the photo myself some years ago, with him wearing the khaki-type of uniform with riding pants and a "bush hat," which perhaps isn't the correct name for it, but it had one side pulled up and buttoned or tied. I think he was standing on an elephant's tusk.

Americans certainly served in the 2nd Anglo-Boer War on the British side the most famous being Frederick Russell Burnham, DSO, who was appointed Chief Scout to Lord Roberts and is credited with teaching Baden-Powel the bush craft used the Native Americans that allegedly inspired him to form the [Boy] Scouting movement. Many other Americans saw parallels with the US War of Independence and fought on the side of the Boers, in the likes of McBride’s Irish Brigade and others joined the St John’s Ambulance [Order of St John] who [funded by efforts of the Red Cross] provided a trained reserve of medical orderlies to supplement the Royal Army Medical Corps.

You may find the article of interest http://www.americanheritage.com/articles/magazine/ah/1976/3/...

If he did serve on the on the Anglo side with a fighting unit, I would hazardous a guess it would have probably been with a Colonial Unit raised in South Africa, rather than with the regular army. At present it would be very difficult to try and find any records without having some idea of a unit he served with.

Would it be possible for you to attach his photograph to your message?
My great-grandfather was born in Pennsylvania, but held British citizenship through his parents. Rumor is that he went and fought in the Boer War, and we even have a photo of him in his uniform, but no other details other than he survived, as he went on to marry and have a family. Must have been some very compelling reason for him to leave America and fight in South Africa. Does anyone know how I can find which unit he served in, or if he indeed did serve? His name was Robert J Ingram, born 1880.

As he served with Australian forces in WWI he British Army papers will certainly be in the National Archives and as he must have served until at least 1902 they should be in:

WO 97/4428 Royal Hospital Chelsea: Soldiers Service Documents; 1900-1913: discharge papers, arranged by range of surname. (WO 97/4232-6322); Brown E. - Brown F.

As I said previously, the WO97 series is presently being digitised and should be online early 2011, or if you can’t wait for that, you’ll need to use a researcher. To find one go to http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/ > Research and learning > Paid research then check out the researchers with web sites for a quick price guide.

Be aware the records will not be as detailed as the Australian ones.

I assume your talking about the Queen’s South Africa Medal and King’s South Africa Medal.

You gave the inscription as “f brown 4571 1st welsh corp fb staff sergeant”

I find that somewhat confusing, are you saying the QSA Medal inscription is:

“4571 Corp F Brown 1st Welsh” ?
and the KSA inscription is:
“4571 Staff Sergeant F Brown 1st Welsh” ?

That would be the normal format and the change in rank indicating he’s been promoted between qualifying for the different medals.

You don’t give his age, so I can’t tell if he was under 45 when WWI began. If he served in WWI with the British Army, even if he was re-conscripted or joined the Royal Defence Corps, then any records, if they survived the bombing in WWII, will be found on Ancestry in British Military records, but you can’t assume he served in the same regiment as he did during the Boer War.

If he didn’t serve in WWI with the British Army, then his attestation and discharge papers should be in document series WO 97 at the National Archives. Unfortunately they are not available online at present and as your in Australia the only cost effective way of obtaining a copy would be to use a researcher.

Note the WO 97 series is being digitised in a joint National Archive - Findmypast project and are expected online in 2011.

In the meantime see http://www.angloboerwar.com/units%20imperial/welsh_regt.htm for some background.

The medal clasps you mentioned:

Queen’s South Africa Medal

Diamond Hill - To all troops who, on 11th or 12th June, 1900, were east of a north and south line drawn through Silverton Siding and north of an east and west line through Vlakfontein

Cape Colony - To all troops in Cape Colony at any time between 11th October, 1899, and 31st May, 1902, inclusive, who had not received a clasp for a specific action in the Cape Colony, or the " Natal " clasp.

Johannesburg - To all troops who, on 29th May, 1900, were north of an east and west line through Klip River Station (exclusive), and east of a north and south line through Krugersdrop Station (inclusive).

Driefontein - To all troops with Army Headquarters, and Lieut. General French's column, i.e. the left and centre columns, which advanced from Poplar Grove on 10th March, 1900.

Ref above from http://www.northeastmedals.co.uk/britishguide/queens_south_a...

The King’s South Africa Medal usually but not always has two clasps:

South Africa 1901 - All those who served in South Africa between 1st January 1901 and the 31st December 1901, both dates inclusive.

South Africa 1902 - All those who served in South Africa between 1st January 1902 and the 31st May 1902, both dates inclusive.

Ref of above from http://www.northeastmedals.co.uk/britishguide/kings_south_af...

Re: Grandfather in Boer War

I take it the WWI medal card you refer to is for Joseph H Moss; No 31554, Driver with the Royal Field Artillery.

As he served in WWI any service prior to his enlistment [or conscription] for WWI will have been combined in a single record. That being the case, if his record survived the WWII bombing, then it will be available via the search section on this site [Ancestry.co.uk]. If your unable to locate any service record [or pension record, if he claimed one], then there is nowhere else to look and no service record will have survived.

If this is him in the 1911 census - a blacksmiths striker living with his widowed mother, Alice, and two siblings, Ernest and Violet, at 242 Park Lane Aston Manor, then if he did serve in the Boer War he had left the army by then and unless you already have information to back it up I shouldn’t assume he served in the Boer War in the same capacity as WWI.

There is no equivalent “medal card” for the Boer War, what there is the actual medal roll for the Queen’s South Africa Medal in document series WO100 at the National Archives, Kew. Unfortunately the QSA Roll is arranged by regiment and is not available to view or search online.
I believe that he was possibly a driver (managed the horses) and that possibly there is a medal card for him. I have details of the medal card but would appreciate any information about his service record. He possibly was also in World War 1. Many thanks.

Imperial Yeomanry

Hi there my great grandfather Henry George Harris served in the 76th Company of the Imperial Yeomanry 1st Provisional Battalion in the Boer War.
I am trying to research where his battalion was station and any conflicts he may have been in involved in. I have his army records but all it states is he was in South Africa 16 Feb 1901 - 28 Apr 1902. I know from a letter he wrote some years later he served under General Broadwood.
I have been on the web trying to work out if his company had a county name but I can not find one information on the 1st Provisional Battalion. Also what does it mean to be a Provisonal Battalion?
Hope anyone can help.
Many thanks

Re: Tracing Boer War Soldier From The Royal Field Artillery

Hello Jeff
I was just wondering if you found your person who was serving with the Royal Artillery for 10 years before serving in the Boer War. My Grandfather JOHN WILLIAM WOODSIDE born 1871 in Liverpool England was serving with the Royal Artillery at Fareham England on the 1891 Census. We have a photo of him in uniform which I think was taken before he went to the Boer War. He married in 1906 and died in 1951.
Regards
Pat Berry in Australia

2023 Pte H Bowman
I have a Queens Medal with 5 bars SA 1902, SA 1901, Transvaal, Orange Free State and Cape Colony. When my grandfather, also H Bowman, died we found this medal in his belongings. My granfather born in 1895 was injured in WWI, Royal Irish Rifles. I am trying to find information about where H Bowman came from etc. Is this information available on line?
