Royal Horse Artillery

Hello,
My great grandfather Albert Frederick Puxty (born 1868 Ticehurst, East Sussex), served in the Boer War, his marriage licence describes him as 'late gunner, Royal Horse Artillery'. The family story is that he was a Sgt Major, although now I've found this reference to his marriage licence, I suspect this may be a myth!
Wondered if anyone else had any links to the Royal Horse Artillery in the Boer War who could give me some pointers on where to start looking for his military record? I think I need more information than this, eg his regiment, before I can search with any hope of success - is this true? How would I find out his regiment, it seems to be a bit of a needle in a haystack?!

Hi Lesley,
Well first of all, the RHA is his regiment! In fact the RHA was part of the Royal Artillery along with the Royal Field Artillery (RFA) and the Royal Garrison Artillery (RGA)
You might find the RA museum site of interest

The best starting place to look for anyone you suspect may have been in the Boer War is the QSA (Queens South Africa) medal rolls. All British soldiers serving in South Africa at the time were entitled to receive this medal.
I have the QSA rolls for the artillery and I think I've probably found your man. There can't be many men with that surname which is why I'm fairly confident.

72269 Gunner A.Puxty, R-Battery, RHA
Received the medal with 5 clasps for Relief of Kimberley, Paardeberg, Johannesburg, Diamond Hill, Wittebergen

Thank you so much for your help - I was starting to doubt all the family stories so it meant a lot to see his name - I can't believe you found something!

as you can probably tell, I'm not very knowledgeable on military history, but I can start some investigating now.

Thanks again,
Lesley

Please don't get your hopes up, because I don't know the answer to your question. i t is just the sort of question I should like to have asked about my husband's ancestor, One Arthur Shakespeare Danson, who was, according to the newspaper report when he and others were made freemen of Dover, an "artillery volunteer in the Royla Horse Artillery."

If you have any luck, please would you share it,

Yours sincerely,

janet Danson

I read your answer to another ancestry member about his ancestor in the second Boer War, and I wondered whether you have any details about Arthur Shakespeare (vaiously spelt!) Danson, who was, I believe, in the Royal Horse Artillery during this war.

Hoping to hear from you

Hi

I am also jumping on the bandwagon here. I saw your answer re RHA. I to am chasing a John Osborn who was in the RHA as a driver on the 1871 census. He was stationed at Aldershot but that is all I can find.

Has any kind soul got any suggestions. It would appear he was out of the army by 1881 and was working as a coachman.

Any help greatfully received.

Sorry Pat,

I think that your ancestor pre-dated mine somewhat, I think mine was in the RHA from 1899-1902. If I do find out anything I will tell you.

I'm hoping you can help.
My ancester William Thomas Willey was in the RGA. Do you have any record of him?
He is not on the 1901 census, so was still at war.

Hi Lesley,

My Grandfather Frank.Broadley no. 19183 was a driver with U battery R.H.A and was at Paardeberg, relief of Kimberley,Driefontein and other engagements in the second Boer war. The detatchments of the R.H.A were attached to General John French's Flying column of Cavalry, mounted infantry and R.H.A 12 pounder artillery.

I have my grandads diaries from this war, i think they would be of interest to you and anyone else with relatives from troops attached to this Force. A good book to read but quite rare is "With General French and the Cavalry in South Africa,it also has battle maps and some really good photographs.

If you are interested i can send you the Transcribed diary typed by my sister. There are some spelling errors as some of the names of places were hard to decipher.
regards Steven.

I have been researching my grandfather who was in P Battery of The RHA (I believe but RFA is also mentioned) and was injured at Battle of Paardeberg.

I have located the article in the times and NY Times and also have his letter to his aunt from hospital.

If it is not too much trouble I would be interested in your transcripts as I have just about finished Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's The Great Boer War which has proved most enlightening.

If you have an interest I would be happy to forward information we have.
