Uniform Identification- Late 19th Century in Sarajevo

Hello All,

I am looking for some help finding ANY information on the uniform in these pictures. The man seated on the far left we believe is my 3rd great grandfather (some family members believe it is his son John Petrovich). He was called Papa but we don't know his first name, his last name is Petrovich. His oldest son (John) was born in 1882 and per his naturalization papers was born in Lelo Ljuba, Now Jugoslavia, Austria and came to the united states in 1910. John lists himself as Austrian speaking Croatian so I assume his father would be the same. Based on his age I believe that his father (pictured) would have been military age at about 1880ish? I believe that they are Austro-Hungarian but I am not sure and I can't seem to make a match. The knots on the sleeves are different from other uniforms. I have looked into the insignia's on the hats (from the shape) don't match anything I've seen either. The photo is marked in the bottom left and the photographer Stefan Ossko, who was a photographer in Saravejo, Bosnia and Herzegovina in the late 19th century. Please let me know if you have any information that will help me in my research.

Thank you!!

maybe was stationed in Sarajevo - so look on map about the symbols what was possible. see some Infantery, also Husars, Train, Artillery and so on: http://www.kuk-wehrmacht.de/regiment/img/oegarnkart1898.jpg

here some pictures:http://www.kuk-wehrmacht.de/regiment/index.html

my guess would maybe Landwehr-Infanterie - not easy to find fitting with hat, trousers and sleeves. some possibilities also with the knots on the sleeves: http://www.kuk-wehrmacht.de/img/oe1898_07.jpg

KuK Austrian-Hungarian Troops - not possible for him is HONVED (Hungary):
http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liste_der_k.u.k._Kampftruppen
http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/K.k._Landwehr

i have no idea what can be meant with his home-town- ?Lelo Ljuba? must be a misspelling...

The ones I have seen are from the 1880s and 1890s. I don't know if they were in use earlier.

However, you should note that they tended to be be made at the end of an individual's service rather than the beginning. Consequently it may help if you knew when these two left the army rather than joined it.

Thanks for the info.

By late 19th century, I assume it is would be 1890's instead of 1850's?

Looking at the original the head is different. Makes you think it was added after the fact, or replacing the original. Basically the head looks like a photo where as the rest looks more "fined".
Several different versions of this type of memento have been posted on these boards over the last 3 months or so. They appear to be quite common. I think individual soldiers bought these for themselves or had them presented to them I don't think they were given to all soldiers. These other ones were for German soldiers.

The locations you mention are in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and I think the soldier is wearing Austro-Hungarian headwear. The text is in German, but this was the language of the Austrian part of the Empire. I suspect that the middle portrait cut off at the top would be the Emperor, the other two would be senior officers. In one version I saw the top 3 portraits were the German Kaiser, the Emperor and the Italian king. This made them marketable to soldiers from all 3 empires. I think this version is probably solely aimed at Austro-hungarian soldiers judging by what little I can see of the uniforms that are cut off.

Only the head is unique to each picture. The rest of the picture is generic. Sometimes there is a space for the regiment to be inscribed, but that may have been cut off from this one, or it may never have had this element.

Sometimes the head of the soldier looks a little odd as it is added later to show the individual whose service is commemorated. Apart from the regiment name, this is the only personalised part of the picture. The artistry of whoever adds the head may not be up to the artistry of whoever made the original print. Can you see a difference in production method by close examination of the original ?

The dates were for later 19th century.

This picture / memento belonged to my Grandfather. Looking for more information on the picture. If possible narrow down the year(s) and regiment this may be for.

Is this something all service men received?
Is the head of the person receiving the memento, or a stock picture?

At top appears to have been renderings of 3 individuals that were cut-off at some point.

Originally the thought is this was my Grandfather, but after some investigation I'm wondering if it may be my Great-Grandfather. My Great-Grandfather married at the age of 28. From what I have read this is a good indication of military service.

My Great-Grandfather was born in 1830, recruitment year 1850. My Grandfather was born 1879, recruitment year 1899.

Both are from the village of Zdiar, Slovakia. The recruiting county would have been Spis (Szepes/Zips).
I am not an expert on Austrian Military uniforms by any means. But this is clearly a Austro-Hungarian uniform judging from the scalloped pockets. The individual has no indication of rank on his collar. So, he was probably just a private. He is wearing the standard "general lanyard" on his left breast which was attached to his qualification badge. What is puzzling here is that the badge indicates connection to the Kreigsmarine (see the anchor). But they did not use this lanyard. A search for this badge did not yield any examples. Sorry.
CK

Thanks Carl, we don't know what Oskar's parents' names were, but are hoping to find a death certificate as we recently managed to find his date of death. He died in 1937 in Berlin, so again, I'm not sure if this record will have survived. But we'll have a look.

I don't know if he was recruited from Romania or if he was already further West by that time. He married a Lithuanian. If anything turns up I'll be back here probably with more questions.

Once again many thanks.

Eleanor

You asked: "Would the next step be the war archives in Vienna? If so,"do" you know if they will answer an email inquiry or is it best to write a letter?"

Maybe. The Austrian Archives have the WWI records for Austrian soldiers. But it is unlikely that they will have any records for your area of the Empire for WWI. They would have records for all officers but not for the enlisted men. WWI records for soldiers from most regions outside of the current boundaries of Austria were recorded by or given to the successor nations. Sadly, most of these records were destroyed.

The Kriegs Archive will respond to emails but to do a search they will ask for a reasonable fee to do it. I always hate to say that finding the military records for a given individual is unlikely but I do think that is the situation here. Sorry.

Have you thought about looking for records of earlier ancestors? They are much more complete.
CK

I'm looking for any information about my Jewish great grandfather, Oskar Tannenbaum, born probably in Romania and died in Berlin in 1937. I know he fought on the Austrian side in WW1 and would like to find out more about this. It's possible he was doing some kind of translation work, but I can't be sure of that.

Are there any records available online, or elsewhere? I found another thread from last year that suggested there was a list somewhere, but I couldn't work the links and download necessary plug ins.

Many thanks!

I am looking for my great-great grandfather. He would have been anywhere between 1850-1930. Apparently he served in the Hungarian Military, other than that I do not know much more. His last name was Eszlari, or Eszlary. He was apparently killed by a horse. His wife was named Anna Kondrat, and his daughter was Margaret.
His name is either Michael (or some variant), or possibly even Edward (his brother or son even. We weren't sure if it was him or his son). Any help would be AMAZING. He was likely from Sajo Petri-Borsod Magye Uteu 14 Magyar Orzag.

if anyone knows any sites where I can look up information like this please let me know. I appreciate it greatly.
Thanks!
-Heather
StillChasingFireflies@yahoo.com

Thank you so much for the translation help! Very interesting about the handgeld. Any speculation about why that would have been received? As for the hospital reference in Vienna and Kaschau, I was thinking along those lines myself already. Right after the mention of Vienna, there is the number 2441, and right after Kaschau there is the number 4319. It dawned on me today that perhaps these could be patient ID numbers, and now that you note the Garrison Hospital, could this be true?

Robert Thomas

Carl,

Thanks once again for your analysis. I'm looking more closely at the service record under magnification, and while I can't make out the German, the mention of Wien is shortly followed by 18 February 1867, followed by something I can't make out and then the number 2441. You are correct that the second number is 4319. Either way, I can make neither heads or tails of it all.

Robert Thomas

Unless he was an officer, which he does not appear to be, it is unlikely there are other military records for him. As I mentioned previously, IR67 had it's headquarters in Presov and not Kosice. IR34 had it's headquarters in Kosice but I see no mention of it in his record. There is a number in the Kosice comment, but it looks 43 or possibly 4319. I have no idea what this refers to.

Carl,

Thank you for all of your help- I'm certainly farther along than I was. I might be able to clean up the final section some more as the size of the image drops as I zoom in. I'll try in a bit. In any case, I'm puzzled by the Kosice reference as well. He did live there until his death, and supposedly was a career soldier. He had children in Kosice from 1870-1880. Are there other records it would be worth searching out for Joahann?
