Polish Austro-Hungarian Uniform Identification and Photo Observations

Polish Austro-Hungarian Uniform Identification and Photo Observations

Classification: Query
Surnames: Gondek, Slowik
I would appreciate if someone with expertise in Polish–Austro–Hungarian uniforms could date and tell me more about the attached photos.

The photo postcard was sent to my late grandfather between 1891 and 1913 (based on the postcard address). I believe the card is written in Polish (if anyone can translate the text that would be an added bonus! – I tried google translate without success).

I read some of the similar posts in this message board and looked at several of the recommended webpage links but remain unsure in my analysis.

Thank you in advance.

Possible one of the Galician or Silesian Jäger (Gebirgsjäger) regiments, which would fit most for polish, but there are also some other possibilities. In any case ALL had A-H Uniforms. "Austrian Polish" did not have special ones. ;) Do you know place where he was stationed. His home town was?

Miltary maps: About legend you can look which regiments were stationed at special towns in special areas. http://www.kuk-wehrmacht.de/regiment/img/oegarnkart1898.jpg
Assume area right above Krakau Area.

By name you could search at Loss lists if ancestor is stated anywhere. Could sometimes show his regiment and also place of birth. Which name did he have, hometown? But results in german: http://digi.landesbibliothek.at/viewer/browse/periodika.verl...

Cannot understand polish but did into translator, not all letters easy to read and to get the correct word then without knowing the language. But sentence says some that Franek is the one in middle with cigarette in hand - I think.

Thank you so much for taking the time to respond to my query!

I have not yet been able to identify the persons in the photo, but as I also have a portrait souvenir card of the man seated on the far right, I assume he is a relative.

My family is from former Galicia: my Gondek and Mastalski families are from Szczawnica Wyźna, and, my Palka and Bodzioch families are from Biadoliny Szlacaheckie.

Based on that information, does that narrow down the regiments? I appreciate your help in pointing me in the right direction!

Biadoliny Szlacaheckie is west of Tarnow, but found no german name for it that time and no Wikipedia. Being close to Tarnow may be of help. So, it was Military commando 1 Krakau (Kraków) and recruiting district commando 57 Tarnow (Tarnów).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tarnów

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kraków

Szczawnica Wyźna has only polish Wikipedia, also no german name found - it´s southwest of Nowy Sącz, also a good help. So it was military commando 1 Krakau (Kraków) and recruiting district commando 20 Neu Sandez (Nowy Sącz).

Military commando and recruiting districts are to find for 1st best at this map:

The other map has the regiments at places. Legend right below shows which one.

"my Gondek and Mastalski families are from Szczawnica Wyźna, and, my Palka and Bodzioch families are from Biadoliny Szlacaheckie."

Loss Lists of WW1 (shows wounded (verw. = verwundet), POWs (gef. = gefangen), deaths (tot = dead)
I post the results - many, many pages to look through if a special one fits at the 4 last names. You may look to find someone in connection with first name….

Gondek (results on 8 pages)
Mastalski (results on 2 pages)
Palka: (results on 19 pages)
Bodzioch (results on 2 pages)
type in last name at line of red magnifying glass: http://digi.landesbibliothek.at/viewer/browse/periodika.verl...
