This year I received the below pictures of my grandfather Kalman Balogh from my 1st cousin in Hungary. Kalman was born and died in Alsogorzsony, Veszprem megye, near Pape. My mother was only aware he served in WW2 in Trieste in Italy 1939-41, from the pictures and others by 1918 + he was a an Artillery Corporal, Geschütz-Vormeister and was awarded the the Karl Truppen-Kreuz, Karl Troop Cross and the Die Tapferkeitsmedaillen, Bravery Medals. Could anyone please help and direct me to confirm his WW1 or WW2 service.

Reading previous threads for WW1 can any suggest or point to the Decoration Proposals of the Hungarian WWI-soldiers which appears the only records for this period. With this picture I may have a chance of further details?

Hi,
serving near Trieste in WWII sounds impossible, it must be the Isonzo-front in WWI, the southern section north of Trieste.
Some of the decoration proposals are in the Military Archive in Budapest, I found this address: hadtortenelmi.leveltar@mail.militaria.hu
Give as many data of Kálmán Balogh as you can collect (birth place and date, mother's name) and ask for a copy of the proposal.
Best regards
Laszló

Thank you for the guidance, I have 3 different family legs in Hungary (Pape) who may be able to get his exact birth date? One 2nd cousin got me his wife's (my grand mothers) from her death record and she passed away 10 years early. I have his father and mothers names and photos. My mum says it was Trieste (she is 78) but remembers him bringing home tropical fruit from Italy 1939 to 1941 then stopped serving and stayed farming for the rest of WWII. I'll ask my mum again.

After 5 months I received his birth and death dates, I e-mailed on the 7th of September and have had no reply to date. Is there any postal address I could follow up with a written request.

Regards
Andy

Try this site for WWII deaths and POW lists. The site is in Hungarian. Use Google Chrome for automatic translation. There are several Kalman Balogh listed.

Website of the Hungarian military archives

This site has the digitised Hungarian Hionved military gazettes and can be very useful. (This site is a complilation of all Hungarian parliamentary publications.) Just type the name (using Hungarian word order into the search box. Viewing the information can be a bit complicated but you will work it out. However some of the more recent military gazettes may not be viewable due to privacy regulations.
