Surnames: Spilka, Oplt, Smolik
Ah: he is from Stehelceves, in the Kladno district. He lists his father (in the US Census, and his father remained in Czechoslovakia) as Alois Spilka of Stehelceves. Josef was born about 1899.

I hadn't tried Kramerius yet. I am now downloading DjVu and its components to use the Kramerius features. Thank you SO much for leading me to a web site with English for this reasearch. I spent hours last night on the other sites, trying to decide whether I could guess better in German on Czech! : )
