Croats in WW1 Austro-Hungarian Army

Hello,

I am looking for more information about my great-grandfather, Ante Curkovic (1877-1918) who was born in the Duvno (now Tomislavgrad) region of Bosnia and Hercegovina.

During the last two years of WWI, he was said to have fought for the Austro-Hungarian army in Galicia near the Romanian border. Apparently, he survived the war but died shortly thereafter. A relative told me he died of botulism but church records state that he died as a result of a cold (maybe Spanish flu?).

I tried to rent a microfilm from the LDS of military records but was told that the material was restricted.

I am curious and would like to learn more about him. I will be in Vienna for a very brief period of time late this year and would appreciate any help or pointers in helping me learn more about my great-grandfather.

I think the material was restricted because of an agreement the LDS with the Austrian government. Privacy laws are very strict in Austria and I think 100 years has to pass before the microfilm I want to view can be seen. I should be able to view it in about 4-8 years time.

After 7 years and a little luck, I think I may have finally found my great-grandfather:

Čurković Ante, PatrfTitUntJäg., bh. FJB. Nr. 4, 3. Komp., Bosnien, Zupanjac, Korito, 1883; verw.

http://digi.landesbibliothek.at/viewer/resolver?urn=urn:nbn:...

My great-grandfather was born in 1877 but the above record shows 1883. The only other person with that name around that time was born in 1881. I have seen spelling errors in the Verlustliste (both people and place names). Is it safe to assume that the date of birth in these records could be plagued with errors as well? Besides paying the archives in Vienna to do the research to possibly (not) verify that this is my great-grandfather, what other alternatives do I have?

Also, based on the above information, can I learn more about where my great-grandfather may have been stationed during the war? Based on stories I have heard, he served somewhere in Galicia near Romania. It would be nice to learn more about him. He died shortly after returning from the war so our knowledge about him is confined to a few short stories.

Thank you in advance for all your help.

Looks I like I made a mistake - I found another Ante Curkovic born in 1883 in the church records. The only other Ante Curkovic in the Verlustliste was killed in 1914.

My search will have to continue.
