Classification: Query
I am looking for information on the 3rd Pennsylvania Regiment. Writing paper on ancestor Joseph Finton. He was enlisted at Allentown, Pa June 1778 and mustered out 3 months later. On November 1, 1778 he enlisted again and served in the 3rd Pennsylvania Regiment under Colonel Thomas Craig, Lieutenant Colonel William Williams and Major Thomas Langhorne Byles. In Pension papers, Joseph states that his Captain was Capt. William Craig for the duration of his enlistment which was January 1781, just after the Pennyslvania Line Revolt.

Here is what I do know about the 3rd Pennsylvania Regiment:

December 1778 through June 1779; The 3rd Pennsylvania Regiment was quatered at the Middlebrook Encampment.

April 1779; The 3rd Pennsylvania Regiment took part in the New Jersey Campaign, 1779

July 15-16, 1779; The storming of Stony Point.

October 1779; End of New Jersey Campaign.

December 1779; The 3rd Pennsylvania Regiment was quartered at the Morristown Encampment, until June 1780.

April 16, 1780; The 3rd Pennsylvania was at New Bridge / Paramus, New Jersey. Major Byles dies.

May 18, 1780; Still in Paramus, New Jersey.

July 21, 1780; Part of the raid on the Blockhouse at Bergen Heights.

August 17, 1780; Quarters Orange Town

September 21, 1780; Marched with General Washington’s army to Hartford, Connecticut.

September 23, 1780; The 3rd was in Tappan, New Jersey/York.

September 25, 1780; The 3rd sent to West Point to guard against a possible thrust by British troops.

October 2, 1780; Major Andre executed, Tappan, New Jersey/York. The 3rd was in Tappan.

December 1780; Morristown, New Jersey for the winter.

January 2, 1781; Revolt of the Pennsylvania Line. Marched to Princeton and Trenton to meet Reed.

January 17, 1781; The 3rd was reorganized, under Colonel Craig, and after recruiting at Easton, accompanied General Wayne upon the Southern campaign, or, at least, the largest portion of it, being detached for that purpose.

What I do not know:

What were these troops doing during the unaccountable dates?

What did they do during the 2nd New Jersey Campagin, 1779?

What information is in the 9 Orderly Books for the 3rd Pennsylvania Regiment from the Revolutionary War. These orderly books are housed at Clark University, 590 Main St., Worcester, MA 01610.

Captain William Craig (brother of Colonel Thomas Craig) commanded Company C, he resigned his command July 1, 1779. Where did he go? and who took over command of this company?

Any information about this regiment during the years of 1778,1779, and 1780 would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you very much.
