I would be most interested in anything you find about
Albany's 4th My 5x-great-grandfather is Col. Kiliaen van Rensselaer

I think this regiment was at the battle of Fort Ann on the 8th
A couple hours of all out bombardment from both sides and a spy sent to misinform Bergoyne.. puff up the number of rebels he is up against. Most every place I search for about the Saratoga campaign, they end it all on the 7th with Arnold getting shot, then I guess Bergoyne sat around playing "Frogger" for 10 days, gets bored then surrenders.

Give it a shot, Unless you deliberately include Fort Ann in searches you will rarely find a thing about it other than a few bios on Wiki

I am not implying this has info on what you are looking for but it might be otherwise interesting
http://www.findagraveforums.com/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&...

Landmarks of Steuben County says that Nehemiah Lewis, father of Abram and grandfather of Truman W. Lewis of Troupsburg received a pension for his service in the Revolutionary War. I am trying to prove Nehemiah's service for a DAR application and would like to know if anyone knows of a source to verify those payments. I have already checkec the DAR patriot index and the pension files on Fold3. He is not the Nehemiah Lewis who is already proven for DAR. He lived in Pharsalia at one time and seems to have died in Petersburg or Petersboro.

I have (I hope) an ancestor listed in the "Military Minutes of the Council of Appointment of the State of New York 1783-1821". He's noted to be in the 68th Infantry Regiment from Oneida County New York. I can't seem to find out any information on that regiment for the time period in the book. Everything I've been able to find is for the Civil War and beyond. Is there a reference somewhere for regiments listed in this book?

Thanks in advance for the help.

What happened to Second Lieutenant John Barnes of the Vermont Rangers Est 1776? Is there a DAR record or any other info? Are there any records on the Vermont Rangers?

John Barnes was probably b. before 1755 and was the Second Lieutenant under Captain John Strong's Company in "Major Joab Hoisington's" Vermont Rangers Est 1776. I think John Barnes may also have been with Wait's and or Hatch's Company later on.

HISTORY OF EASTERN VERMONT.
On the 22d of May, 1776, at a convention called for the committees of safety of the counties of Cumberland, Gloucester, and Charlotte, and held at Windsor, Jacob Bayley, of Newbury, was chosen brigadier-general, and Simon Stevens, brigade-major of the brigade comprising those three counties.

For the purpose of affording protection against the savages, the New York Convention determined, on the 23d of July, 1776, to establish ranging companies in the more exposed counties of the state. Cumberland and Gloucester counties were ordered to raise two hundred and fifty-two men. On the following day, Joab Hoisington was appointed major of the rangers in the two counties. On the 6th of August, 1776, the committees of safety for Cumberland and Gloucester counties met at Windsor, and nominated the officers for the four companies into which the rangers were to be formed. After considerable delay, the nominations, with a few exceptions, were confirmed by the New York Convention. Commissions were granted to the following officers on the 10th of October, 1776, and on the 23d of the same month they were sworn to the faithful discharge of their duties.

COMPANIES OF THE RANGERS.
Captains. First Lieutenants. Second Lieutenants.
Benjamin Wait,
Elisha Hawley,
Zebulon Lyon,
John Strong,
Eldad Benton,
John Barnes,
Joseph Hatch,
Simon Stevens,
Amos Chamberlain,
Abner Seelye.*
Benjamin Whitney.
Jehiel Robbins.

I noticed this post and I too am a descendant of Joshua Odell, who did serve in the revolution with THE LINE - First Regiment, under COLONEL GOOSE VAN SCHAICK and CAPT. DAVID VAN NESS. Joshua is listed in the muster roll as having enlisted 1 April 1776. Along with the service comments "On command as a carter at Ticonderoga." Joshua is also listed with the "Enlisted Men" on pg18 of NEW YORK IN THE REVOLUTION as COLONY AND STATE.
I found his service card on fold3, "Compiled Service Records of Soldiers Who Served in the American Army During the Revolutionary War" and there's another card with a file number on it (35524618).
There is also another descendant named Miss Emma Elizabeth Odell (DAR#32998), of you google her name and that DAR number you'll find volume 33 lineage book going from her back to our Joshua Odell. Although I disagree with the birth date, everything else agrees.
Here are two other descendants that appear in "Sons of the Revolution. New York Society" Yearbooks - Charles Mortimer Odell, Isaac Herbert Odell.

I saw your note here about Richard Bailey and the shoe buckle from the Revoulton. My father, Charles McCallum often told me that story. His grandmother, Hattie Tuffley Bailey gave it to your grandmother before Hattie's death in 1932. My father described it to me often. Any chance of a photograph of the buckle? I know it would cheer my father. He is 89 now.richard was a major. He had been a leading town council member of Richmond, RI. He was in his late 60s at the time of the battle. This fits the history of that battle. It was one of the first. Each town elected its own officers. Many of the leaders were old men, not fit for war. The battle was a defeat, and the old soldiers returned home. Richard died Nov 21,1780 in Richmond, RI.

Help finding info on Loyalists from New York in the Southern Campaign James Hayner b. abt 1750 NY to Carolinas to KY

I have searched for years for a trace of my ancestor, James Hayner (Haner, Haynor, etc.) in New York State, where I believe he was born about 1750. I find no trace of him until he was in Kentucky by 1806. I believe he lived for a number of years somewhere in the mid-Hudson River Valley areas of Columbia, Rennselaer, Albany, or Saratoga counties, and I know he had either close or distant relatives in that area through DNA testing that closely connects James Hayner's line to the larger NY Hayner family, but have been unable to find any mention of HIM in New York.............until, perhaps, now. There is a James Hayner listed as a private on an American Revolutionary War Loyalist muster roll of Captain Gray's company in the New York Volunteers from February into April of 1781.........and he was listed as being in a Southern Campaign during that year in connection to a commander named George Turnbull. I believe his outfit was sent to the Carolinas at one point...........which is also important because I have a little indication that James DID live in the Carolinas before moving to Washington County, Kentucky by about 1806..........the Kentucky years, those being from his mid-life on, are the years of which I have details about him. Unfortunately, the first half of his life, as you can see, has been all but lost to history, and I am trying to find him and re-connect him, and myself, to his New York State and German ancestors, but am struggling. Does anyone has a clue or suggestion?? Are there other Loyalist records where I might perhaps find names of his parents or siblings? His children born between 1787-1800 we believe were all born elsewhere (Carolinas? New York?), not in Kentucky, but have only one census record clue where one grandchild of James says his father was born in SC. I would appreciate help from anyone who has knowledge of the Loyalists. Did New York Volunteers who helped in the "Southern Campaign" frequently stay in the Carolinas? Might he have stayed and had children in South Carolina and then moved on to Kentucky? Were these folks somewhat persecuted after they lost the war and he was intentionally leaving very little clue after arriving in Kentucky as to his past? He first shows up in the 1810 Census in Washington Co., Kentucky (remember he is about 60 years old by then--and lived until 1849 - almost 100 years old) I have been unable to locate him in 1800 or 1790 censuses under various spellings. Any suggestions of where I might go from here, especially to get more info on the specific James Hayner listed as a NY Volunteer, would be very helpful and welcome!

Actions of the 6th Regiment Dutchess County Militia

I'm transcribing an account of the service of an ancestor in the 6th Regiment of the Dutchess County, New York Militia during the American Revolution. Three times there is made mention of a place:

"He again enlisted at Nine Partners in the year 1778 as near as he can recollect for the term of Nine Months and served under Captain James Tallmadge [6th Regiment] & Lieutenant Robert Wood in Hopkins' Regiment of New York Militia - That he was stationed at a placed called the Lay Pool (?) about twenty five miles from the Hudson [River] in the interior and whence prisoners were sent for safe keeping"

This place is mentioned three times. It looks like "Lay Pool" or "Log Jerst" or "Lay Joal". Each time it's almost impossible to read. Are there any records of the actions of the 6th regiment about 1778 that might let me know the name of this place?

Thanks!

You do not say how you have proved that your wife's ancestor is the William Yerks listed on the Militia muster roll published in the book.

Militia muster rolls are not proof of active-duty service unless otherwise noted on the roll.

Without looking at the original, one could not determine even if the list of persons was a list of those who actually reported for the drill and nose-counting. Transcripts can omit details, such as additional notations entered by whoever drew up the original list.

Lack of an original and lack of evidence of active duty would be impediments for use of such a list in a lineage society application.

I came across a DAR application that brought me to a book entitled "Souvenir of the Revolutionary Soldier's Monument Dedication at Tarrytown, NY, October 19th, 1894". I found that book as a PDF online.

http://play.google.com/books/reader?id=nktGAAAAYAAJ&prin...

In it, there is a Revolutionary War Muster Roll. According to the book, the original Muster Roll was in the possession of a Professor Bashford Dean of New York.

In addition to the well known John Yerks (a member of the group of Patriots who captured Major Andre), there are several other Yerks family members from Philipsburg on the Roll.

John Yerks Sr.
John Yerks Jr.
James Yerks,
William Yerks

I do not see any mention of them (except John) or most of the others on that Muster Roll in any online databases. Does this muster roll exist today? Where? Who has it? Is it authentic? What do you make of the fact that names on this list are not seen anywhere online. My wife's great x 6 Grandfather is the William Yerks mentioned on the roll. Do you think I can use this reference on a DAR application?

Thanks.

Philip L.

Now that you put in the name Joshua Odell, I could look.

Just as the DAR entry notes, p. 25 of _NY in the Revolution as Colony and State_ does list a Joshua Odle as being among the ranks of Privates in the 1st NY Regiment, Continental.

However, I can not find a thing in the actual Regimental rosters, and the name is not indexed as being among those in any Continental regiment.

Since, as you pointed out, so much original material was destroyed in the fire at the NY State Library (after the books were published that extracted material there), it is a difficult or impossible task to reconstruct where that particular book entry came from. Other published material on the 1st NY does not list Joshua Odle / Odell.

It is possible he was mentioned on some document that no longer survives, but the Company muster rolls and pay rolls that survive are pretty complete except those for the first incarnation of the 1st NY Regiment before December, 1776. It was the Second Establishment from that time when Col. Gosen VanSchaick was in command of the regiment. So since you have no information on a date of service, there is no evidence for stating that Joshua Odell/Odle was in the 1st NY under Col. VanSchaick.

I am sorry I can not contribute to solving this puzzle.
My 4g-grandfather, John Myers, served as an Ensign in the 2nd Regiment under Col. Hay! The following is a transcription of one of the affadavits his wife submitted in her application for a widow's pension. (Her application was approved.) I used this in my recent application for DAR membership.

[Transcribed by Judith Myers Ahrens, 4 Feb 2011]

"State of New York
Rockland County

On this twenty-fifth day of June 1839 personally appeared before me Abraham B. Stephens, one of the Judges of the said county, Catharine Myer, a resident of the town of Ramapo in said county, aged eighty-four years, who being first duly sworn according to law, doth on her oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the provision made by the Act of Congress passed July 4, 1836. That she is the widow of John Myer, who was a Ensign in a company commanded by Capt. Hendrick Tenure, in Col. A. Hawkes Hay's Regiment, and served during the Revolutionary War as follows. That early in the month of July in the year 1776 the British having taken possession of the Hudson River at Nyack and Harverstraw, when Capt. Tenure and his company was ordered out to guard along the said river at Nyack and her husband went as Ensign aforesaid and served until late in the month of November of said year, either along said river or at the Long Clove (?), or Clarkstown, the time the British sailed to New York for the winter with but little intermission of a day or two at a time. As a great part of the company had enlisted into the five Months Service, those remaining had to serve as might be called one continued tour to state the time her said husband served from the time he left home to his return, she cannot but believe that he was not at home at any time for one week, and was out two, three and four weeks at a time, and is confident that he served not less than three months in said year in tours as aforesaid not including the time he was absent from the company as his first tour was full half of that time.

That early in the Spring of the year 1777 the different companies was divided into four classes and the officers of the companies did also take tours in serving in the field and her said husband did serve and perform his full share of actual duty in the field during the years 1777, 1778, 1779, 1780, and 1781, and serving at least one week in each month during said years commencing in the month of April and ending in December in each year except the year 1781, in which year the regular tour of duty ended at the news of the taking of Lord Cornwallis, serving at stations as aforesaid or at Tappan town and different other station in this county or on scouts in the County of Bergen in the State of New Jersey to Closter, Schralenberg, Liberty Pole, and as far down as Fourt Lee.

That owing to the great length of time since the aforesaid services was rendered and the imperfection of her memory of the recitate (?) thereof and the irregularity of the different tours, she found it impossible truly to recite all his services or more particularly to state the commencement and end of each tour and the number thereof, has caused her delaying her application and the foregoing recital thereof is as fully as her memory and the information she has received from men who served with her said husband during said war will enable her to state the same – and the annexed commissions and affidavits is the proof she now offers to prove the same.

She further declares that she was married to the said John Myer by the Rev. Samuel Verbryck on the fifth (?) day of May in the year seventeen hundred and seventy four, that her husband the aforesaid John Myer died on the twenty first (?) day of April eighteen hundred and eighteen – and that she has remained a widow ever since that period, as will more fully appear by reference to the proof hereunto annexed.

Sworn to and subscribed on the day and year first above written –
Before me [signed by] Abm. B. Stephens, Judge
[Catharine signed with her mark]

I do certify that I am acquainted with Catharine Myer the above deponent and believe her to be a person of veracity whose testimony is entitled to the fullest credit and further that by reason of old age and infirmity she is unable to attend court or to subscribe (?) her name. [signed by] Abm. B. Stephens, Judge
What exactly have you looked at?

A very comprehensive run of muster rolls for the First NY Regiment (Continental) under Col Gosen VanSchaick is on Ancestry.com, as well as a smattering for its predecessor by the same name as constituted until the reorganization ("second establishment") as of late 1776. Have you looked at all of them? They are indexed (not perfectly) but no index links go to specific pages - you must browse through the images.

On both ancestry and footnote are the Rev. War Compiled Service Records, arranged alphabetically by Regiment. They will tell you dates of service and what Company an individual was in. Have you looked at them?

Since you did not give a name and vital dates, no one can help further.

I have found references that my ancestor, Joshua Odell served in the Military. He is even on the DAR list, but I can not find any actual records? He served in the Revolutionary War First Regiment, NY Line under Col. Goose Van Schaik Between 1776 and 1783 and also He appears in the Muster Rolls of Provencial troops for Westchester County NY. He was also a member of the Westchester County Militia, 1758 during the french and indian war. I have found Revolutionary Pensions records, etc. for other ancestors, but only these references about his service. I have looked here on ancestry and in footnote, but no luck, any suggestions? Thanks so much!

Fishkill Supply Depot, Fishkill, NY

I belong to the Friends of The Fishkill Supply Depot, a not-for-profit group trying to preserve vestiges of the the Fishkill Supply Depot, a major supply depot for Washington's Army from 1776-1783 in Fishkill, NY.

In 2007, it was confirmed by an archeological study that hundreds of soldiers were buried there. They are in unmarked and mostly unknown locations in the area that was the Depot. We hope to correct this.

We are trying to collect the names of any soldiers who died at Fishkill and could possibly be buried there. Close to 2 dozen men have been identified so far. At last Fall's Revolutionary War Weekend, at dusk a moving tribute was led by the 5th NY reading off the names of those found to have died and are buried at the Depot. We would like to have more for the weekend event this year.

If you have discovered in a pension file that your ancestor spent time there on duty, was sick there, died there and was possibly buried there - PLEASE CONTACT ME PRIVATELY!

We want to put names to the men buried there. We want to recognize those who served our country and were in Fishkill during the war. We would like to find living descendants of those brave men to help honor their sacrifice to our nation.

I have found mentions of men marching through Fishkill on their way to West Point and other strategic places in pension files. I have found men who were on guard duty at the burying ground at the depot.

We are trying to preserve the remaining open space from development. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. We hope this can be a nation wide effort.

http://www.fishkillsupplydepot.org/

Can you help us ???

Thank you,

Judy Wolf

I pulled out the memoirs and now that I've refreshed myself with them my Archibald and your's don't add up. Here's what it says about my Archibald though and a bit of other info. This was written by my Great Great Grandfather George Alexander Farr, who was born in 1842 in New York:

"I have heard that the now rather numerous Farr Family has descended from two brothers who came to the Massachusetts colony in the seventeenth century from the border of Wales, but this is only tradition and not very reliable at that. All that I have heard came from my father many years ago, and his knowledge was vague and indefinite. He had only a shadowy rememberence of seeing his father. My Grandfather's name was Archibald Farr, a young physician who removed from Vermont to Monroe County, New York shortly after 1800. There he married Lucinda Davis, the daughter of a wealthy Quaker named Ezra Davis. I think the descendents of the Davis family still reside near Honeoye Falls where my father was born. My Grandfather entered the army as a surgeon in the War of 1812 and was captured at Queenstown with the small detachment that crossed the Niagra from Lewistown. It is to the eternal disgrace of Americans that some thousands of militia at Lewiston refused to cross the river and left their comrades unsupported. I have no further definite knowledge of my Grandfather. It appears that after the war he departed to the west, then a vast wilderness, with the ostensible purpose of purchasing lands, and was never heard from afterwards. There were rumors of his last being seen entering the Black Swamp, so called, in Ohio, but no further trace of him was ever found....There were born of the union of my Grandfather and Grandmother two children, Laura, I think in November 1808 and my father (Sylvester Farr) born October 13, 1809...my Grandmother died at the age of about 35, in 1818, and left my father and his sister orphaned, and they lived with their Grandfather Davis"

That's pretty much it on any Archibald connection. If you have any information I would be grateful to hear it. Thanks.

It looks like Spafford and Honeoye Falls are about 80 miles apart so it's interesting. I can't imagine there would be 2 Archibald Farrs that are doctors in the same general area though.

Would you have any more specific info on your Archibald from the memoires? His parents, siblings, children?
There actually is more information on him in the west. For some years, Farr researchers have presumed that this is the same Archibald that marries a "Risleye"(?) in Kansas(?). From memory, he also had a second marriage.

You say "My folks did not appear on the land bounty list however."

Militiamen were not offered Bounty land. Militia duty was an obligation of every able-bodied free white male aged roughly 16-60 (varies by time and place). Most existing rosters were created when men appeared for regular drill (not considered active duty).

Bounty land was offered to men enlisting in the Continental Army who served at least 3 years. The Levy Troops also were offered bounty.

It is essential when conversing about Revolutionary War records, to specify whether you are talking about Continentals, State Troops or a County militia regiment - a number alone does not adequately indicate what sort of unit is the subject.

The militia could be called out for defense within the County if and as needed, and might include patrolling, guarding prisoners, assisting with escorting supplies bound elsewhere, etc. In pretty rare emergency instances militia units were sent outside the County.
Unfortunately the only information I came up with was that the records of 2nd Orange County Militia were destroyed in a fire in Albany in 1911. I was able to locate Cornelius Cor Smith's homestead and mill (1760)in Tallman, NY. The home is still there but the mill was gone. Just foundations left for the mill. I used old maps to locate it.
As far as specifics on the participation in battles of the Regiment, I have not had any luck. I have not done any research lately but will resume in the spring. If I locate anything that may help you I will let you know. Good luck!
PS: Thank you for the information on "Winter Soldiers". I will look it up.

Re: 2nd. Regiment of Orange County Militia (NY), Col. Haye's-Eckerson's Company

I was wondering if you ever received any additional information on the experience of the 2nd regiment as I too have 3 ancestors in it. My folks did not appear on the land bounty list however.

Interestingly a book I started began on page one relating a letter from Col Hays to Genl Nathaniel Greene complaining about his men in the seocnd regiemnt. The book is called The Winter Soldiers. As you can imagine, I was shocked to see something about my ancestors' regiment right at the outset of this book. The Col's complaints were about not getting his men to show up regularly and about their desire to go home to put in their crops or check on their crops.

I'd be interested to share anything I have which might help.

Bill Parker
I am a direct desendent of George Klock. My family has the orriginal land grant signed by the bear, wolf and turtal tribes dated 16 Feb. 1729/30. We also have the original deed which was in the posession of George Klock dated 1763. This deed was executed by all parties except George Klock even though his name is listed as one of the owners. This deed was passed to his son Peter Klock who passed it to his daughter Eliza Klock who married Walter Hough who had a daughter Frannie Hough, She married J.D. Hull, they had a daughter Anna Rebeca Hull who is my grandmother. Anna Rebeca Hull died when my dad was 10 days old. My father Carroll E. Hyde was close to his grandmother Faannie Hull who pased the deeds to my father.

Pension Records for John Crawford

I have Rev. war pension records for John Crawford, which I requested years ago from National Archives when researching my Crawford line. This John Crawford was born in 1763 at Scarsdale, Westchester, New York. He volunteered in 1776 and served as a waiter to Capt. Samuel Crawford, who was his father. After the war he lived in Saugerties, Ulster County, New York, and became a minister. I would be happy to send the papers to one of his descendants.

Rev. soldier to be honored in Saratoga Springs

Major Cady was in the Mass. Line.
In about a month or two (time is uncertain) a memorial marker will be placed in the Cady Hill Cemetery in Saratoga Springs, NY. It will honor the previously unrecognized Major Jeremiah CADY , born 1731, who served at the Alarm of Lexington in 1775 and led a detachment or regiment to Quebec for the relief of our army there. He was the great-great-grandson of Nicholas CADY who was progenitor (or primo papa) to most of the Cadys in the US as I understand. Some of the surnames I have that are descended or closely related are BACON, DARLING, FAIRCHILD, PINE, REED, SPAULDING, ULLREY, O'BRIEN, ROYCE, AUSTIN, BEATTIE, LIZOTTE, SELLECK,GILBERT, CALKINS.
If you are interested in attending and in that area at the time, let me know and I will send more information when it is given to me. If you would like information about how the surnames connect to Cady also, let me know and I will send what information I have. My email address is cady978@aol.com
Barbara Love Cady

Re: Pension Pages Info

You are talking about the ledger listing payments, entitled "U.S. Pensioners, 1818-1872" on Ancestry.com. This is not on HeritageQuest.

In the first instance, that would be city of Albany.

In the second instance for the Utica pension office, you will note many entries where the payments just end, with no notation as to reason why. It all depended on how much information the clerk had in front of him, and possibly how much he felt like entering everything in front of him, or whether someone was breathing down his neck so he just wrote in the essentials (according to his instructions, not so much according to what we'd want to know now).

There are reasons other than death why payments might end. One of my ancestors was struck off the pension roll when a son-in-law wrote the pension office saying that he had deserted and did not deserve the pension. Later his 3rd wife applied for a widow's pension successfully, showing evidence that he had returned to the regiment.
Pension Pages Info

Search on Ancestry and Heritage Quest, I have found 2 pension pages that show info for my ancestor, Archibald Farr. They leave me a little confused. On the one page, the place is "New York City of Albany". Is this suppose to be NYC, or Albany? On this sheet, it shows he transferred to Utica, March 1825(?).

On the Utica sheet, it only shows payments from 1832 - 1834, nothing else. IF he happened to have died in 1834, would it not have said so?
