I joined the SAR based on his service. It was complicated to prove. There was another Henry Wanmaker (a 2nd cousin of this Henry) who fought with a Loyalist unit in the Rev. War. Contact me for details.

Ken
Ken@GermanNames.com

John Albright - New Jersey Volunteers

Hello! I am looking for information regarding my 4th great grandfather John Albright who served in the New Jersey Volunteers under Captain Joseph Lee. ANY information about his service in the Regular Army or previous life would be most appreciated. Thank you all! After the war he moved to New Brunswick with the rest of the loyalists and was granted 200 acres near Queen's lake. He came over with his wife Elizabeth and 4 children.

Thank you so much for the quick reply. Looks like I have a lot of work to do on my end to prove this is my ancestor who served some sort of capacity during the Revolutionary War. Thank you for pointing me in the direction I need to go. I very much appreciate it. It's gonna take some time but hopefully, in the long run, it'll be worth it. Thanks again!

If by "Bergen unit" you mean a company of Bergen County militia, then "served in" is something of a misstatement.

All able-bodied free white males aged roughly 16 to 60 (varies by time and place) were considered to be part of the County militia and required to be available for active militia duty for defense within the County. Active duty could include such things as patrolling, guarding prisoners, or assisting escort of supplies bound elsewhere.

Surviving militia rosters were usually created at the time men reported for regular drill and nose-counting, and do not reflect active-duty service unless specifically stated.

If you can show that your ancestor was the only one by the name who could have been in a specific Company, that would be a step forward. Companies were generally based in specific geographic areas; you would need to find the county Court or Committee of correspondence record setting out the districts and show that your ancestor was the only one by the name who lived in a particular one. It would help to show that his neighbors as shown in land records, tax lists or other records were in the same Company. You would need to locate rosters of this Company. While Mr. Stryker is a respected author, you'd need the original records.
Henry Wanmaker

I am trying to see if this is my ancestor. Evidently, Wanmaker was a very popular name back in the 1700's. If this is my Henry who served in the Rev. War as an ensign in Captain Bartholf's Bergen unit, then I can qualify for a membership in the DAR. My Henry was married to Mary Bartholf and he was born in Bergen, baptised in Paramus and died in Pompton Plains in 1828. There is a Henry Wanmaker listed in The History of Bergen County by J.M. Van Valen,NJ Men of the Revolutionary War by Stryker, and was an ensign. How can I make the connection this is my Henry? Can anyone help me please? Thanks in advance.

Fishkill Supply Depot, Fishkill, NY

I belong to the Friends of The Fishkill Supply Depot, a not-for-profit group trying to preserve vestiges of the the Fishkill Supply Depot, a major supply depot for Washington's Army from 1776-1783 in Fishkill, NY.

In 2007, it was confirmed by an archeological study that hundreds of soldiers were buried there. They are in unmarked and mostly unknown locations in the area that was the Depot. We hope to correct this.

We are trying to collect the names of any soldiers who died at Fishkill and could possibly be buried there. Close to 2 dozen men have been identified so far. At last Fall's Revolutionary War Weekend, at dusk a moving tribute was led by the 5th NY reading off the names of those found to have died and are buried at the Depot. We would like to have more for the weekend event this year.

If you have discovered in a pension file that your ancestor spent time there on duty, was sick there, died there and was possibly buried there - PLEASE CONTACT ME PRIVATELY!

We want to put names to the men buried there. We want to recognize those who served our country and were in Fishkill during the war. We would like to find living descendants of those brave men to help honor their sacrifice to our nation.

I have found mentions of men marching through Fishkill on their way to West Point and other strategic places in pension files. I have found men who were on guard duty at the burying ground at the depot.

We are trying to preserve the remaining open space from development. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. We hope this can be a nation wide effort.

http://www.fishkillsupplydepot.org/

Can you help us ???

Thank you,

Judy Wolf

I know I read this somewhere in ancestry.com and now I can't find the story. I am related to the Hendershots of New Jersey. I believe 2 brothers (not sure which) were involved in driving one of the 200 wagons that transported the hidden Liberty Bell from Philadephia to Allentown, PA during the Battle of Philadephia in 1777. Can anyone tell me their names? Can you point me to where I read that story? Thanks so much!

My ancestor, George Woodley, served as a private in the New Jersey Volunteers from 1776 to 1783 when he was evacuated to New Brunswick. In his petition for a land grant he stated that he served in the Battle of Eutaw Springs, South Carolina, September 1781. I have several copies of original muster rolls for the period September 1781 obtained from the New Jersey Archives in Trenton and in the Ontario Achives in Toronto. None of these muster rolls indicates the location of service which I assume to be Charleston, South Carolina but would like confiration.
I would appreciate help in locating archives where such information might be found.

Using the links here

http://www.myrevolutionarywar.com/index.htm

you can develop a list of what Continental Regiments were at this battle.

Then you can find all Campbells listed on the surviving rosters of these Regiments using the index to NARA Micropublication M246, "Revolutionary War Rolls" on ancestry.com together with what Regiments are referred to in that index, explained on this site:

http://www.revwar75.com/ob/m246.htm

You can then use the Compiled Service Records for each of the Campbells in each Regiment to find one listed as died in 1778. You can browse through them by regiment on ancestry.com, or use the index and searching features for the Compiled Service Records on www.footnote.com, which has free trial periods where you can view the compiled service records.
Campbell in Battle of Trenton

I have been looking for years to find some evidence proving an old family story about a Campbell ancestor in the Battle of Trenton. The story is that a soldier surnamed Campbell(Robert or Lewis possibly) was among the very few of Washington's troops injured in the battle. He later died in 1778 from the wounds he suffered. His child, in my family tree, was George Campbell, b. 3 Jan 1778 in New Jersey and d. 1854 in Adams Co., Ohio. Is there anyone who has studied this battle and has information like muster lists, troop lists, etc.? Any good leads would be appreciated.
Dick C.

The rolls for the 1st NJ Regiment (Continental) are on National Archives microfilm Micropublication 246 ("Revolutionary War Rolls"), rolls 55, 56 and 57.

You can ask your local library to borrow these by inter-library loan. Many libraries subscribe to Ancestry, which has the images from these in its site, but using the microfilm is much much faster because you don't have to wait for pages to load.

All free white able-bodied males aged roughly 16 to 60 (varies by time and place) were supposed to be available for County militia duty, which would include showing up at regular drills. Sometimes there are surviving muster rolls, sometimes not. For Warren/Sussex, I think not.

There is a large ledger with non-obviously arranged militia lists (not identified as such, and with no specific date-ranges) in the NJ Archives in Trenton, but to tell what pages of lists go with what place you have to have done a lot of neighborhood research. Since the ledger is a non-contemporaneous copy there are bound to be errors and omissions.

There may be County Court items regarding militia activities, but unless there were extensive claims for reimbursement for active-duty service or for property losses, there are unlikely to be lists. Militiamen seldom saw active duty since they were supposed to serve within the County (there are some major exceptions, but I don't happen to know of any for Sussex Co.). But especially in 1778 and 1779 there would have been patrols along the Delaware River, especially the Mine Road.

Good hunting,
Jade

I am intersted in finding out about my ancestor's war service.

He was Rev. Nichoas Cox and wa enlisted as Chaplain in the First Regiment,Second Establishment, New Jersey Continental Line on November 29th 1776 and received his Q.M.G. Department certificate on February 2, 1780 for his service during the War. He lived in Sussex County (later became Warren County), New Jersey at the time.

He is listed in Stryker's book once, but I wasn't sure if there were some other records out there that may show him.

His son John Cox who was born in 1765 was a private of the Sussex County, New Jersey militia according to DAR records, though there is no source for this info. Not sure if there would be anything out there regarding who was in the militia. John later obtained the title of Captain, but I'm not sure when that occured.

I don't have access to Ancestry, so not sure if there is anything on there that would help. I have info on what & where the 1st NJ was during the war, but nothing stating specifically if Nicholas was at these events.

Any help would be appreciated,

Thanks

Jeff

If you don't have the original documents, you can get a few pages from the application file on HeritageQuest, which most libraries subscribe to; some have web sites with a link to the site, some have arranged for you to log in using a library card number or driver's license number.

The complete application file is available at www.footnote.com, which has a free trial plan, or you can subscribe.

Sometimes the files give some genealogical information, sometimes not. They almost never mention siblings or parents.

The NJ Archives in Trenton will not do your research for you. The offices in the Burlington County Courthouse also will not do your research for you.

If you want to go through the documents available, you must go there yourself or hire a knowledgeable researcher, preferably a certified genealogist.

Good hunting,
Jade

Jade, thank you for your reply. You are correct, I never did say what I was looking for,I have posted and checked the message board's with no luck. This application for a Rev War pension was filed in Warren Co Ohio abt 1832. My understanding as it read's he had to prove or verify he was in the War and was able to do so through other's living there who knew him and must have served to,because it was authorized by the Claim's Dept of the War Dept. It dose not say what Twp in Burlington he came from,so that make's it harder to place his family line.My line is from James Borden from Evesham/Chester Twp Burlington,Co. There are Job's mentioned in his line but Job show's in other Borden name's also and coming to Ohio. I was hoping maybe to find his parent's and family. I live in FL,so I need to write to the Burlington Co Archive's and see what they may have. Once again, many thank's. Charles.

You don't say what your question is.

If he served in the Burlington Co. Militia or the NJ State Troops, you may find more information on his service in the NJ Archives in Trenton.

If your question is genealogical, try the Borden surnam message board. But your answers are more likely to be among the Burlington County records in the Courthouse for deeds and some estate records as well as County Court records. The archives in Trenton has some estate records as well.

Good hunting,
Jade
It's great that Dennis could supply information on where Capt. Erskine was based.

Since all Militia were organized, recruited and paid by the County government, the most important identifier of a Militia unit is the name of the County. In this case: Bergen Co., NJ Militia. The name of the Captain is not the key identifier. Captains can die, resign or be promoted and replaced, or the militiaman may transfer to a different Company.

All free white males were supposed to be available for militia duty, including turning out for regular musters and drills. Many, if not most, militiamen never saw active duty, so a name on a militia muster roll does not necessarily reflect active-duty service.

By the way, "Anthony" is one English rendition of the Dutch name 'Theunis'. Other spellings and renditions include Dennis, Thonges, Tunis.

Good hunting,
Jade

I could not find any info on Theunis A. Merrion, but this may help in your hunt.
This info comes from Historical Register of Officers of the Continental Army & the Library of Congress.

Robert Erskine, New Jersey, Geographer and Surveyor to the army of the United States, July 27, 1777; Died October 2, 1780.

Letters of Delegates to Congress: Volume 5 August 16, 1776 - December 31, 1776
Benjamin Franklin to Robert Erskine .
Robert Erskine, (1735-80), Scottish geographer, hydraulic engineer, and fellow of the Royal Society, had emigrated to New Jersey in 1771 to represent investors interested in developing iron mines in Passaic County. Sympathetic with the American cause, he became a captain in the Bergen County militia in 1775, and in July 1777 was appointed "geographer and surveyor of the roads" in the Continental Army.

Dennis Segelquist
Civilian & Military Surname Searcher
http://www.civilwarthosesurnames.blogspot.com
NJ RevoWar expert to speak in Dover Del. Monday

On Monday, February 18, the Central Delmarva Revolutionary Round Table welcomes Dr. Jude M. Pfister at Sorrentino’s Restaurant. This is at 518 South Bay Shore Road, Dover (on the west side of 113, where it divides from route 13).

At 6:00 p.m. is a self-treat, optional dinner. Dr. Pfister will speak about 7:00 on History, Myth, Memory, and the Pennsylvania Line. The Continental Army spent the winters of 1776-1777 and 1779-1780 around Morristown, New Jersey. The first mass immunization against smallpox was there in 1777, and the 1779-1780 winter was the severest of the 18th century. These two facts sharply contrast with the almost limitless myths and lore that permeate the Morristown story. Dr. Pfister wrote:

"I am particularly interested in how memory played a part in the development of the Morristown National Historical Park. Morristown was the first historical park in the National Park system and on March 2, 2008, the park will celebrate its 75th anniversary . . . I will provide a brief overview of the two (actually three) encampments and then talk about the problems with folklore in the context of the PA line placement. Early in 2007 we completed work on an extensive archaeological assessment of the PA line area and found that the site was not where the legend had placed it. "

After graduating from Delaware State University with a B.A. in History (1991), Jude earned his M.A. from Washington College (1993) and his Ph.D. from Drew University (2007). He has worked as a curator and historian for the National Park Service since 1993. He currently is Chief of Cultural Resources at the Morristown National Historical Park where he oversees the museum, library, and archival programs.

Thanks to Dr. Jack Gardner for the above description. If readers can come to Dover earlier, and want to research at the Del. Archives, I could meet you there.

We are hoping that someone has access to the Middlesex County, New Jersey Militia records.

We have a newspaper article about Richard Livings and his family. In this article, it said that Richard Livings served as a private in the Middlesex County, New Jersey Militia, and these are records which indicate that he died in the service of his adopted county.

Richard Livings, was born about 1750, in England and he married Rachael (?), there. About 1770,, they came to America, bringing their sons, Joseph, Richard, Johnthan. Another son Daniel was born in New Jersey.

We are hoping, that someone can find Richard Livings listed in the New Jersey Militia.

Thank you,

Records of NY Militia are in NY, originating in the Counties where they lived. All men aged roughly 16-60 years (varying by time and place) were considered to be in the militia. A large proportion of the militiamen did not see active duty. When you inquired a few months ago several persons did lookups for you on what is available in the basic print resources that were published before 1911.

Detailed records would be where he lived at the time, or in the NY Archives, assuming those mentioning your man survived the fires (last I know of was in 1911). This requires personal in-person research: Albany County Court, Committee of Correspondence records, and any surviving muster rolls were probably sent to the Archives. Other manuscript materials may have been subsequently collected by the New-York Historical Society, New York Public Library, and other collections you can locate by keyword internet search.

For data on whether or not you are related to this person, you'd need to consult the records on where he spent the end of his life, in Canada.

Neither his NY service record nor records relating to his descendants would be found among materials relating to New Jersey during the Revolutionary War.

Good hunting,
Jade

You say this >>list of the CAPT. JACOB DuBOIS' COMPANY, 2d BATTALION (Revolutionary War) is from an Ancestry.com database.<<

If you were to say exactly what 'database' (published book? author/publication data? microfilm image? what microfilm? what frame or image number?) and the identifying data that accompanied it (State and poerhaps County), together with the date of the document, it would be possible to get a better idea of where the unit was recruited.

Good hunting,
Jade

I read on another forum that Theunis Anthony Merrion served in Capt. Robert Erskine's Company of New Jersey Militia during the Revolutionary War.

Does anyone know where I can find his name listed with this company or his military record? I have been unable to find it no matter how I spell it.

Thanks.
Jo
