Are you still looking and what would you like to know? The David Owens that gave the testimony was the son of Capt. David Owens who was half brother to Capt. George Owens. David Sr and George were sons of Trader John Owens of Washington County PA.

I would like to know why they sometimes used the Owings spelling and the ancestry beyond John Owens. My Owings line came from Owings Mils, Maryland and then Kentucky.

Because spelling of the Owens name was variable depending on who was taking down the record. A surname frozen with a certain spelling is pretty much a modern thing. You'll find this family spelled "Owens", "Owen", "Owings" even "Oins". I am also from a DeGraffenried family, also known as DeGraffenreid, Degraffenreed, De Graffenried, Graftenreed, etc. You can't get hung up on spelling but instead focus on records attaching one "Owens/Owings/Owen" to another.
Having said that this particular family is usually Owens, the census taker put them down as "Owings in the 1820 census in Scott County, Indiana.

Yes, do you have John's ancestry? I know all about the etymology of the Owings surname - some did revert to a simpler spelling but mainly in the Deep South. Capt. Richard Owen/Owings experimented with seven spellings in his life time, this children took the fixed spelling. For whatever reason, many Welsh Owen took the Owings spelling upon leaving Wales - perhaps in the English world they discouraged the patronymic system. I have never seen any other form of Owen miss-spelled Owings - its always the other way around. For example: The Valley of Owen in California is really Richard Lemmon Owings.

If you mean Trader John Owens he is my dead end. I know he came out of the Welsh Tract in PA, but that's all I know unfortunately.
