Dear Sir:
The data contained herein were obtained from the papers on file in the Revolutionary War claims for pension and bounty land based upon military service of Bailey OWEN in that war.
Bailey OWEN the name is also shown as Baley OWENS was born in Bute County, North Carolina, date, and the name of his parents are not shown.
While a resident of Bute County, North Carolina, Bailey OWEN enlisted in May or June, year not given, and served three months as private in Captain James DENTON’s Company, Colonel LEWIS’ North Carolina Regiment. He enlisted in 1779, served nine months as private in Captain Matthew RAMSAY’s North Carolina Company and was in the battles of Stono and Bacon’s Bridge. He enlisted in February, in the year of the battle of Guilford, and served three months as a substitute for his brother, William OWEN, private in the North Carolina troops, the name of Captain not stated.
After the Revolutionary War he moved from Bute County, North Carolina, to Pendleton County, South Carolina, about six years later moved to Smith County, Tennessee, a few months later moved to Sumner County, Tennessee, then moved to Rutherford County, Tennessee, and four years later moved to Fentress County, Tennessee.
He was allowed pension on his application executed October 24, 1832, at which time he was seventy-four years old, and a resident of Fentress County, Tennessee.
He died December 25 or 26, 1840, in Fentress County, Tnnessee.
Bailey OWEN married August 16, 1797, in Chatham County, North Carolina, Mary or Polly SOLOMON. They were married at the home of John DOUGLASS, no relationship stated. She was born December 19, 1774, place and the names of her parents are not stated.
Soldier’s widow, Polly OWEN, was allowed pension on her application executed November 6, 1848, at which time she was a resident of Fentress County, Tennessee. She was allowed one hundred sixty acres of bounty land, on account of the Revolutionary War services of Bailey OWEN, on warrant No. 26289, under the Act of March 3, 1855.
The following names of the children of Bailey and Polly OWEN are shown: Joshua, born May 19, 1798, Mily, Winny, Mary, William, Patsy, and Nicy, born in October 1813.
Said Joahua OWEN married February 27, 1822, in Fentress County, Tennessee, Polley, her maiden name not stated. She was born March 2, 1804, place, and the names of her parents are not given.
The following names of the children of Joshua OWEN and Polley are shown:

John F. OWEN “ September 3. 1825
William O. OWEN “ March 17, 1827
Abby B. OWEN “ September 18, 1829
Elias Oran OWEN “ July 29, 1831
On August 2, 1853, said David B. OWEN had been married about six or seven years. No further information in regard to said marriage.
The following family data are shown also: Jesse WOOD, Jr. born April 12, 18111, Matilda BEATY, April 9, 1813, Abigail BEATY died March 27, 1840.
Soldier’s son, Joshua OWEN, was a Justice of the Peace for Fentress County, Tennessee, in 1849.
In 1853 one Jesse WOOD, aged eighty-three years, was living in Fentress County, Tennessee, no relationship to soldier stated.
In 1849, George OWEN, about fifty-three years old, was residing in Fentress County, Tennessee; he was a relative of soldier, degree of relationship not stated. One Westly OWEN was living in 1849, his residence, age, or relationship not given.
In 1853 on A. J. BEATY, aged thirty-six years, was living in Fentress County, Tennessee, and one Thomas K. BEATY, was then residing in Clinton County, Kentucky, no relationship to the family shown.
In order to obtain the date of last payment of pension, the name of person paid and possibly the date of widow’s death, you should apply to The Comptroller General, General Accounting Office, Records Division, Washington DC and cite the following data: “Polly OWENS, widow of Bailey OWENS, Certificate No 1085, issued December 14, 1853, rate $50.00 per annum, commenced March 4, 1843/8, Act of July 29, 1848, Nashville Tennessee Agency”.
For information in regard to the location of the land you should address the Commissioner of the General Land Office, this city, and furnish that official the number of the warrant, acreage, and the date of the act.
