listed in the DAR Index serving from New
England
states--NY & NJ to name a couple. None spelled

Surnames:
There were at least David, James, Peter, Samuel and John in various NY militia units, and David, Samuel and Nicholas who seemed to pronounce the name the French way, again in various NY militia rosters. These men did not necessarily have active-duty service, and there's no telling from the rosters what their ancestral histories were.
If you're interested in your own lineage, you'll need to document back to men who were in late teens or older in that period.
