I found a picture of her!! She was competing for Miss Ohio!! Does she look like your father or any of your siblings? It is an older picture but you never know!!! I have never been this lucky before! Usually it is like finding a needle in a hay stack!

Oh my goodness! Ann, how can I ever thank you? A name....seriously, a name and everything? It's kind of hard to tell in the grainy photo - I can't really say if she does or not. My father had no siblings, both parents were dead by the time he was 5, he was adopted by his grandmother, who was the 1st woman to graduate from U Penn's dental school (she was already a doctor). I have gotten nowhere with ancestry.com - none of the info you shared was stuff I found there at all. Would you recommend I join geneology bank and newpaper archives sites? You have done this so easily and yet I've come up empty in my searches until you typed in some info with your "ties". But I don't want to keep expecting others to do it for me.

It occurs to me that this may not have been "our" susan shafer because she would have been 17 in that photo right? isn't that too young?

Not a problem at all! I am happy to help you out. Yes!! You should join. I have gathered so much info on these two sites. Actually, in 1966 she was 19. So she was probably born in 1947-1948. I believe their divorce was final in 1949.

Now that you know where the divorce took place, you should be able to get copies of the documents from the Clerk of Courts in the county where the divorce took place.

In general, court proceedings, including divorce, are considered public documents.

I don't know if this is typical - I suspect it is - but everyone's willingness to pitch in and help me in this journey is so touching. Strangers, who have nothing to gain, have jumped in out of the goodness of their hearts to help me here and I am so impressed! I will definitely be joining geneology bank and track down those records in Ohio. I cannot thank you all enough!

So Ann & Dee....I've hit a wall, it seems. I've sent for a copy of the divorce record and am awaiting that. The clerk who responded & gave me instructions said she looked for the divorce record for the year 1948 (not finding it in 1949), which isn't consistent with what the newspaper said, but I'll have to wait to see what the actual documents say. I guess it's possible she was already born and may be listed in the documents but again, I'll have to wait to see what they say.

I did join Geneology Bank, Ann....I got no more information than you were already kind enough to provide me with. And until I have a DOB for Susan E. Shafer I am at a standstill - there are some listed in the white pages in Ohio. But I'm hardly comfortable simply cold calling them randomly in the hopes that one of them may be her without knowing more. Some have ages listed, some do not.

Any other suggestions out there for me?

Thanks again you two - your kindness and generosity are overwhelming!

I am more than happy to help you. I know how it feels when you have reached a brick wall! I will do some more digging around for you. Could you request a birth certificate or even a marriage certificate for her? I am sure she was married. She was Miss Ohio! I am sure she had plenty of guys knocking at her door! I will let you know if I find anything ;)
