I just posted a story about my McCamishes. I also had a GGG Uncle Bartley McMurray, who survived the Sultana. He fought with the 3rd Tennessee Cavalry. Legend has it that he somehow got to shore after the explosion even though he could not swim! He is buried in the Eusebia Cemetery near Maryville, TN. The McMurrays, along with the McTeers and Bogles were among the first white families to settle in what became Blount County (1786.) Recently, I discovered my husband's GG Grandfather was also aboard that fatal ship-a Federal soldier. He too survived, returning home to Albany, NY. Life is strange...
