I have James' military info in front of me from the Nat'l Archives. He inlisted as Captain in Col. G. of the 9th regiment of Indiana volunteers, Cavalry on Jan 21, 1864.( 121st regiment volunteers ) and mustered on Sept. 9, 1863 at Indianapolis. James address was Dublin, Wayne Co., IN. He was captured at Sulphur Trestle, Alabama as well as Enoch, on Sept 25, 1864. In Jan of 1885, he was exchanged from 19 Dec. 1864...and was eligible for duty March 1864. In July 1864 he was on special duty comanding a detachment of the 9th Indiana cav.

He was a prisioner of war from Sept 25 1867 and confined at Richmond Va. Paroled at Memphis, TN Nov 13 1864 and reported to camp on Dec. 2, 1964.
Sent back tor regiment Dec 20 1864, partially invalid. his pension was valid until he retired in Oct. 23 1967.

He mustered out of the 9th on Aug 28, 1865

His Brother Enoch was enlsited 21January, 1864 at Indianapolis with James. He joined and enrolled for duty on Dec 20. 1863. His residence at that time was Dudley, Henry Co., IN He bacame a corporal on Jan 6, 1864. He, too, was captured at Sulphur Trestle . Alabama on Sept 25, 1864. Paroled and sent North. He drowned on April 27, 1865 when the USS Sultana exploded. His body was never found. Nor were any effects. Signed James R. natin, June 21, 1865.

As a post script....Enoch was a corporal of James R. Nation, his grother, born in Delaware Co, IN. Was 19 yrs ol, blue eyes, light hair. 6 ft tall and a farmer., He was pind for 213 days of imprisonment $63.90...or 30 cents/day.

James signed for his money due.

David Nation, another brother, also joined during the Civil war and became, eventually, probate judge of Delaware Co
