Dear Leeann1546; as well as anyone interested in the Sultana shipwreck.
My name is Louis Intres, and I am a Ph.D. candidate in the Heritage Studies Department of Arkansas State University. I joined this organization a year ago and attended the meeting in Knoxville, Tn. I am presently working on a project to set up an archive in the Arkansas state University Library and Museum on the campus in Jonesboro, Arkansas. Our campus is located only 45 miles from the location where the Sultana sank in the Mississippi river. We are setting up a permanent research archive for the men who were on the Sultana.
It is our hope and task to collect documents and stories about each and every man, woman and child aboard the Sultana on thet fateful voyage. I am asking each family to provide me with photocopies of their research and all documents relating to their ancestors so that we can archive them here at our University. We would like to establish one place where researchers, historians and families can come to for all the possible information about the ship and those aboard.
You may give your historical documents to me at the annual meeting in Chattanooga, in April< or send them to me at: Louis Intres, Department of Heritage Studies,P.O.Box 1690, State University Arkansas, 72467.
I will be attending the annual meeting in Chattanooga and will arrive on Thursday night. I will be available all day on Friday to interview you about your ancestor. I hope that many of you will look me up at the hotel and allow me to speak with you about your family history and its relationship to the Sultana.
You do not lose control of the information and are only sharing it with academics, scholars and researchers who wish to write about their histories.
I look forward to meetin many new friends and receiving your family's stories.
Sincerely;
Louis Intres
