The "mobile" (iPad, iPhone, Android) app(s) are the a watered-down version of the FREE Ancestry.com on-line member tree program. These "apps" are interactive in real-time with the mother-ship, the ACOM member tree program.
FTM and the ACOM member tree program are different animals.
FTM (PC or Mac) is a stand alone desk-top genealogy application, and are ACOM products. The current versions of both platforms are able to go "on-line", they have a built-in browser which enables you to search ACOM record collections (providing you've subscribed to do so), among other things. A database/tree in FTM can sync and share *some* data with the same named counterpart in the ACOM on-line member on-line tree application.
I'm pretty certain FTM 2009 did not have treesync capability.
FTM (PC or Mac) is a full blown genealogy application and has many more bells and whistles (like running reports) than the ACOM on-line member tree program. One you pay for, one is free.
Again, call ACOM and see what they'll offer, explain that you're a long-time user of FTM and are changing platforms, (PC to Mac).
I highly recommend you create a small test tree (load with citations and media) to mess around with. This help you to learn the functions of how all these apps function and work together, without the fear of messing up your data. There is a steep learning curve at the onset.
