Christine has answered most of your questions. Here's what I do, using my file manager which has a pretty good built-in ftp function:

server name: users.freepages.rootsweb.com
user name: ... put your own user name in here
password: ... put your own password in here
remote directory: genealogy_html/
server type: automatic
passive mode: (leave empty)

Web address for my site is: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~(my site's name)

The filemanager mentioned, TotalCommander, is shareware, but can be used without instantly buying.

I've btw bought it some 8-10 years ago and never had to pay for any of the frequent updates. And it's an application with several free extras: dual window, multi language, packer, unpacker, renaming, synchronizing, search, compare, quick view, thumbs view, etc. etc.
