Are you seriously suggesting that ANY genealogy company charges $4 million dollars for 30 day access? They would be out of business before they started since no one would pay those rates.
Assuming that was a typo, you might want to check the actual rates. Ancestry.com rates are readily available by going to
http://ancestry.com and clicking the SUBSCRIBE NOW link.
If you golf, you probably pay more than $20 (US Deluxe Monthly Membership) in green fees for one day. If you scrapbook, you probably pay twice the monthly World Deluxe Membership every time you buy supplies. If you want local governments to put their records online for "free" access, you should remember that they will need to increase their tax base/rates to cover the costs of indexing, transcription, servers, bandwidth, etc.
