Here are my notes re. Joseph Mellen, parent of Walter Mellen, parent of Riley Mellen, parent of DeForest Mellen, parent of Joy's Henry James Mellen.
Living in Ellisburg, Jefferson County, New York in 1855; household of Walter Mellen; called "father."
Calculating from the age at the time of the 1855 NYS Census, Joseph would have been born c. 1775. (See Jefferson County Web Site - go to 1850 Federal Census - I think 1855 NYS is now posted as a subsidiary of that Census).
At this point I am only aware of children and families of Walter Mellen and Nancy Mellen. There may be other children.
My notes for Walter Mellen (10 June 1805 - 3 June 1871) Buried Brewster Settlement Cemetery, Ellisburg, Jefferson County, NY.
Appears on the 1865 NYS Census for the Town of Ellisburg, NY, as WALTER MELLEN, husband of LYDIA. Unable to read age from Census. He was born in Vermont. He has been married once; is still married. He is a native. He is a land owner.
Also living in the household is his wife, LYDIA, age 60, and a son, HENRY MELLN, age 17. (Wife, Lydia, is Lydia Mason, daughter of Jeremiah Mason and Phebe {also called Rhoda} Luther).
Also living in the household are GEORGE BABCOCK, age 11, Grandson, and ADA BABCOCK, age 5, Granddaughter.
I show children of Walter and Lydia Mason Mellen as:
William Information provided by South Jefferson Historical Association. They list William Mellen, deceased, as a son of Walter and Lydia Mellen. Notes: Wooden marker, age is now gone.
