The information I gathered from records and Hercules' family members was that Hercules Marylan Benbow (born 1925 in California) was a daughter of Hercules Davis Benbow (born 1892 in Alabama). She was called Jessie or Herci, according to family members. The site does indeed show her as female, since that is the information I found. (It happens more than some think. My supervisor on one job was a lady named Charles; her father wanted a boy to carry on his name.)
There was another younger male Hercules Davis Benbow, born 1927 in Missouri, son of Edward C. Benbow (born 1889-1890 in Alabama). While I did not manage to uncover a relationship between the two men born in Alabama, I assume that there probably was one. The younger Hercules may well have been named in honor of the older one.
