The only way a putative father (i.e. one not married to the mother) could have been named would have been by his being present, with the mother, at the registration. A registration by a third party which named the father would have been most irregular and I very much doubt the registrar would have agreed to it.

Is it possible that the birth certificate was amended at a later date? Are there any initialled annotations?
