Hey All,

I have had lots of success with my family along the Thom and Kinman line. Mainly due to finding a relative on here and there being lots of information on them on the net. However, the Murray link has proved tricky.

I had to order the marriage cert of my great grandparents to find out his fathers name and have no had to order his birth certificate to get his mothers maiden name. I am hoping this will open up some doors otherwise ill have to give up on that side as I cant keep affording to buy certificates for each person. Any tips anyone?

Tip 1: Civil registration certificates are crucial building blocks of an accurate family tree. It is a false economy to skimp on them.

Tip 2: Family history is, never has been, and never will be a cheap hobby.

Tip 3: There's no rush: your ancestors aren't going anywhere in a hurry.

Tip 4: At the end of every day, put all your coppers in a big jar. When it's full, that's one more certificate you can buy.

Tip 5: Don't ever be conned into spending more than the statutory £9.25 for a certificate.

Tip 6: After 1 July 1837, CofE marriage register entries are identical to marriage certificates. Some registers are available online; some have been transcribed by FreeReg; many have been filmed by the LDS.
