First, thank you for helping. No, this is not the same person. Tom Brown was an African-American who lived in Winona, MS. The crime occured in Winona in 1902. His first trial was held in Montgomery County, MS. Three subsequent trials were held in Carroll County, MS. Oliver Bibb, whose name is often mentioned in articles about lynchings, was killed because he supposedly gave Tom the gun used in the crime. I know the common name makes things more difficult. I am trying to find an article that describes Tom, or mentions his family. I know it is a long shot, given the era. By the way, when he escaped from prison, he did go to St. Louis, MO.
