I know what you mean. His wife didn't appear until she was his widow. So, there is no census data available for 1890, and she doesn't appear in the directory probably because she wasn't employed (although she's listed in the 1880 census as a dressmaker). I've scanned a digitized Waco newspaper from the period (there were two, but only one is digitized and indexed).

What evidence of her could exist?
