Abbreviations - Number after spouse's name in city directories

What does the number after the spouses name mean in city directories:
Example:

Albatie, Paul (Eliz; 3) press opr h256 (128) Lawndale.

I get Paul and Elizabeth live at 256 Lawndale, and he's a press operator and the old house number used to be 128 Lawndale.

Is the 3 the number of children? Number of household members? Years married?
(Find these throughout the 1929 Hammond, Indiana City Directory, attached is a screen shot)

I'm lost. Thanks for any help!

If you check the 1930 census and look up the two Paul Abaties and George Abbey, that number in parenthesis with the wife's name matches exactly with the number of their children as shown in the census. With George & Nila Abbey there were no children shown in the census which corresponds with no number after Nila's name in the directory.

Have you looked at the General pages of a Hammond directory to verify what that number represents?
