Hi there,

I'm a qualified genealogist with 43 years experience - my speciality is dating and placing old photographs.

Pennyore House was a charitable institution set up in 1893 in Swansea for the destitute and infirmed children. "Pen Aury Calon Wir" was the institution's famous motto. The aim was to educate these orphans and ensure they get a good upbringing, far from the childhood they would've have living with their parents. Unfortunately, the house is no longer in existence since it was demolished to make way for a new council estate in 1974.

George William Holden was a famous photographer who was born in 1877 in Wandsworth in South London. His father was a shoemaker and an aspiring actor. George trained as a photographer from the age of 13, and later moved to Swansea and started his career as a commercial photographer. He ran his own business, and later moved up north to Newcastle in the 1920s. It is no surprise he is listed as the photographer - many institutions and schools hired him.

Kind regards,
Craig
