Sorry, I am rather new to this; I got so excited at a possible connection I shot off an email without thinking. I have now looked at the census returns for Thorpe and that confirms that in 1861 (a year after they married) Ellen Cooper was suddenly Ellen Goddard, but on the census night with her parents, George and Elizabeth. Thomas Goddard, my great great grandfather was also with his parents (Henery (sic) and Mary (I think/hope)) - they perhaps couldn't yet afford a place of their own.
