My great aunt married a Joseph Bolling, Bowling, Anderson County, TN.
I found that often the, surname; Bolling was often spelled, Bowling.
For you information:

Joseph Bowling, b: 5-28-1872, Anderson County, TN., d: abt. 1952, Knoxville, TN.
Married: Laura Bell Hawkins, b: 5-23-1877, d: abt. 1942.

They had a son, Joe Bowling, b: abt 1902 and a duaghter Martha M. b: 8-2-1897.

I don't know if this will help you but i know how frustrating it can be trying to track down distant relatives.
