As a follow up, another source of error in erroneous submittals that have become part of Ancestry Family Data Collection - Individual Records is the use of compiled genealogies by submitters, many of which are erroneous and some of which are fraudulent. See the archived page concerning Mayflower hoaxes from Caleb Johnson's old site - many of those hoaxes can frequently be found in family trees online:

Many of the citations on that page are to articles in Mayflower Descendant, and Caleb is currently editor of that journal. Any research project involving descendants of Mayflower passengers should include a check of Mayflower Descendant as it is the scholarly genealogical journal for such research. To aid in checking MD I have compiled a consolidated listing of the articles in that journal. It needs to be updated for a few of the most recent issues, but is still auseful resource:
