The McKirdy Indexes are a list of deaths in 4 counties in Scotland covering some limited years. The one for Sutherland is from 1855-1875. It is good from the point that it often lists spouses, fathers or other relatives ie 'brother of' etc. They are on microfiche at my local Genaelogical Society. I will look up to see the other counties for you if you require but Sutherland is the only one I have used. Looking back over some old e-mails I have received or sent, I have copied a couple that may be of interest to you (and helpful). Best wishes and good hunting. Regards, Fay.
I have just come across another web site that may be of interest to you. It is a General Index to Births, Marriages and Deaths in Scotland and lists the LDS Family History Centre Film Numbers. On the Death Index it gives Film numbers for the years 1855 to 1956. Anyway the site is
www.ktb.net/~dwills/scotref/13302-bmdtables.htm .
If you live in reasonable proximity to a LDS Family History Centre I believe they will order in any of the Film numbers for you to look at if they do not already have it on hand.
Anyway, best luck, let me know if it was worthwhile or not.
BELOW IS A COPY OF A REPLY I GOT FROM ANOTHER PERSON WHO I TOLD ABOUT THE MC KIRDY INDEX - IT MAY BE HELPFUL TO YOU ALSO.
I enjoyed your letter very much. Many thanks! I took some time to do a web search for "McKirdy Index. Along the way I discovered the benefits of the Advanced Search at
http://www.excite.com/search/advanced.
Using the advanced search set for "All countries" plus "Must have" McKirdy and Index and Deaths and Scotland, it was possible to narrow results down from 778 (basic search) to 13. Not bad!
Of the 13, the most useful appropriate site is:
http://home.vicnet.net.au/~dpsoc/scotland.htm[The basics of research in Scotland]. Besides the McKirdy Index information, there are several items of value. It was good for me to review the basics.
