If you all are speaking of Col. Archibald Murphey (b. abt 1742), son of Alexander Murphey and Ellen Van Dyke, husband to Jane DeBow, then the spelling is definitely Murphey - EY, not Y.
Someone noted that they kept using the same names - Yes they did! Many generations had Alexanders, Archibalds, James, Johns and Williams. I have seen some attached to Ancestry files and also by Google searches for Murphey geneologies.
Several of the widows of revolutionary soldiers had difficulty in obtaining war pensions due to the misspelled last name. Some war records indicated Murphy (no E) or Murfee (no phey). There are affidavits available showing they were one and the same for service.
