I looked in the NSDAR Patriot Index and found the following information. There are 26 John Wards listed in the patriot index but this one comes close to your John:

Children Pensioned: No Heirs Pensioned: No
Spouse: (1) Jane Daniells

The index does not specify what they did in the Rev War other than which state they served and Rank.

Since someone has established membership in the NSDAR through him, you may obtain a copy of the DAR application by sending a check for $10.00 payable to Treasurer General NSDAR. Provide the patriot information and if you know the child of the Patriot through whom descent is claimed, provide that also. Mail the check along with the information to:

Washington, DC 20006-5303.

Requests for record copies may take six to eight weeks as they are very busy.
